I keep seeing posts that somehow the LSU defensive coordinator needs experience. Which is just not true.

Dan Quinn didn’t have much Coordinator experience when he took the Florida job. His path was near identical to Ryan Nielsen to this point.

Jim Leonhard
Brent Venables
Jeremy Pruitt
Kevin Steele
Barry Odom
Charlie Strong

All of these are just a few of the many examples of guys who were amazing position coaches that jumped into coordinating defenses at major programs by doing extremely well at coaching the position they were assigned.

This happens all the time in the NFL and in college. That’s why names like Ryan Nielsen and DeMeco Ryans get mention(by me) because they are ready to make the jump.

Happened last year with Tem Lukabu.

(I have a bias towards ascending guys. I like when my head coach, and coordinators are being talked about for bigger/better jobs. It means that the program is preforming.)

I think considering our last hire was such a debacle fans, boosters, and admin want a sure fire candidate. Opportunity on a guy who’s never called defensive plays or developed and taught a scheme is long past. That experiment should have happened last time when we hired bo

I think almost everyone on that list started with a DC job at a smaller program. Except Steele, who was so good as Bama DC that they brought in Kirby.

Totally agree.. a few of were on the boat last year screaming to hire somebody with an upside.. not to play it safe.

So you’re saying, another safe hire?

I still like Arnett the most, but I wouldn’t mind a fast riser.

No I’m suggesting a candidate that is preferably younger, but that has already been a DC whether in the p5 or fbs levels

DCs come in three ways:
1.) Internal promotion (no experience, you earned trust)
2.) Proven position coach(no experience, but your position is lighting it up on the field. Outside hire)
3.) You started at small schools and worked your way up. Zach Arnett, Pete Golding, Marcus Freeman.

There is more than one way to skin a cat.

Nick fricking Saban had ZERO coordinator experience.

Michigan State liked what they saw and promoted him from being a DB coach at Navy.

Glenn Schumann is the one guy with no official play calling experience that I’d 100% trust to be a very good DC. Based on everything else I’ve read, heard, and watched about him.

IowaCity...you are an enthusiastic poster but a little less “know it all” in your posts would go a long way. I’m assuming you are just like the other 99% of the folks on this board and just a fan. You are not a coach and no matter what you believe, you really just have opinions, just like the rest of us. Maybe entertain the idea that others are entitled to their opinions and you should respect all opinions, even if you strongly disagree with them

Thanks

Agreed. There are names out there you go for because of their production of their position and the upside they present.

Yes, they aren’t a “known known,” but there are risks with every hire.

Give me a guy who is killing it at what he does right now!

My wife tells me I can be condescending. Don’t mean to come off that way.

Apologies.

Nick Saban was the DC for the Cleveland Browns before Michigan State hired him to be head coach.

His first DC experience was at Michigan State.

Later, he was their Head Coach.

I just need 247 to have a DC big board or we have one thread with a list of names so I can link their profiles and background
