if this guy is successful he will bolt back to the SEC. Oregon didn't learn their lesson from Cristobal or Taggart. They should have hired a west coast guy who would be more inclined to stick around.

He's a West Coast guy I believe.

Edit: He's from Missouri so I'm wrong.

So does this end the “must be waiting for a DC/OC who is not in the playoff debate” for those who think that’s why one hasn’t been announced yet?

Interesting hire. Elite DC from SEC going to the PAC.

Head coach move, not a coordinator move. So we could still wait.

Was hoping Oregon would have went back to Chip Kelly.

Oregon never goes after big splash hires even with all the money in the world. This seems kind of on brand.

Lanning is a continuation of Mario. Smart/Saban coaching tree that uses the 4th quarter program, he will scale the infrastructure and football operations to mirror the SEC schools, and he’s a high-energy recruiter. He can continue to recruit the SE for trench players. He will manage the roster aggressively too.

We don’t want a West Coast coach.

You went for a west coast guy first (Wilcox), and were surprisingly turned down.

No. Wilcox wouldn’t agree to caveats that we wanted if he were to be offered.

Go back and look at who was interviewed first. Also, Oregon supposedly offered Chip too. Oregon obviously went into negotiations simultaneously with several different candidates. People act like negotiations happen in a vacuum when they’re taken in context.

So they went for two west coast guys* first? Kinda shoots down your “we don’t want a west coast coach” narrative from a few posts above.

Yeah, I know Chip is a New Englander, but he has been coaching on the west coast long enough

These were fallback offers. They were the floor of the search. Also, we have some pissy donors that love the good ole boys club. The same ones that complained about the Helfrich firing.

If you put two and two together, Mullens interviews Lanning first. Everyone was reported to have an offer.

Lanning got the job. It was also reported before the interview that Lanning smashed the interview.
