Alabama isn't going to have trouble paying off their bonds for 2006 and 2009. Plus, Alabama put up half the money for both their expansion, with the rest being covered by bonds.

Even when those things are dealt with, they still have to deal with Troy and USA for regional recruits, not to mention a stronger USM. That's something that wasn't there in Watson Brown's best years at UAB.

UAB had 17658, 28351 (Mississippi State), 8872, 13909, and 14103 for their home games.

But they can pay off their stadium if they JUST sell all the boxes, have 7,000 season ticket holders, and sell 16,000 single game tickets per game. Every year.

This is cited everywhere. Someone on al.com even posted a link on al.com to the UA system financial report to prove it. So I looked at it. They were right, UAB does bring in 2 billion in revenue each year. But more than 75% is from UAB the HOSPITAL not UAB the SCHOOL. The hospital is not going to give one dime to build the school a football stadium.

UAB played 5 home games. What else are they going to have there? High school games? You'll lose money running the stadium for them because high schools won't play there unless they get a cut. Concerts? Maybe....but I'm betting most will stay at the BJCC and Verizon. Birmingham and Jefferson County aren't in a position to bail them out if it doesn't make money. Why should the BOT throw public money at it when their state funding is cutting every year, forcing them to raise tuition more and more each year?

UAB fans aren't serious about football. A friend of mine is a student there and is a huge UAB fan. He goes to as many UAB games (all sports) as he can. He was pissed he had to miss the UAB/Houston game. Why did he miss it? Because Alabama/LSU was on at the same time (He hates Alabama, BTW). That sums it up there. That game took place the week the stadium was shot down and they got 17,000 to show up. The average required by the NCAA is 15,000. But they will fill a 27,000 seat stadium week in and week out.

Then there's the whole "FREE UAB" thing. They paid a plane to fly over Auburn with a banner last week. Why didn't they donate that money to the athletic department at UAB? That's how a program like Alabama and Auburn build expansions to BDS or builds a new arena. They get fans to donate the money. UAB doesn't have that. They were on the right track at one point when Watson Brown was coach and AD. He might haf gone 5-7 or 6-5 every year, but he was really starting to get a facilities improvement plan and funding in place. I don't know who forced him to choose wither one title or the other, but UAB very well might have their stadium if he was still AD.
