FWIW, I see this as a pretty scumbag move as well. I understand him wanting the job but he did tell his boys he wasn't going anywhere. You just don't do that.

Say little-be direct. "I don't plan on going anywhere and now I will only take questions that pretain to our team.

like schools honor theirs ?
like players honor theirs and stay for their full eligibility ?
like you give all the money back you have made in a company when you change jobs ?

The young players are reacting OUT OF EMOTION and understandably so, but when they grow up, they will understand the business reality of the world and that while football in High School was a SPORT, football in college is a BUSINESS.
Many here on the board are still young and believe in the totalitarian view of the IDEALISTIC concept and not in the reality of things..that will change as you come to understand business.(not intended to insult anyone-we were all there)

what would you have a coach say while RUMORS are flying around and the contract/negotiations are going on?

Bo should have never coached that last game at LSU. I think once you are hired by a school your loyalty lies there. I felt same with Weis, Saban, etc.

These players are getting welcomed to the real world where big money is involved. Kelly has no obligation to tell the players his every move during the most important negotiations of his life. Would any sane adult spill the beans to a bunch of 20 years olds before a multi million dollar deal is closed?
I question how long some people have been sports fans. Don't listen to what coaches say during negotiations in a coaching search - you won't get the truth, and if you do, that coach likely just submarined the deal.

It's not like he left and took all the starters with him. The same players that would be playing the game with him will be playing in the game without him. If they weren't pissed before they could use this as motivation now. I dont know his name but one of their senior linebackers said something to the affect of "the leaders will put this team on out backs and get it done. It was the players playing the game on the field not him". I don't think Kelly being there or not being there will change the outcome

Good point Starkvilletigerfan, I never will forget when Ray Perkins was coaching at Alabama and they were playing in the Sun Bowl, he was asked the question about returning as coach of the New york Giants, His answeer was something like, "as far as i Know , i will still be the coach at Alabaman". I told my dad right there that he was leaving to New York which he did but read closely he did not out and out lie like some have done.

* rumors start to circulate about a coach being interviewed, which by the way THE UNIVERSITY MUST GIVE PERMISSION TO DO.
* the players in the dressing room ask..or news media
Mr. Coach is it true that you are leaving ?
what in the hell you want him to say...
if he even said he was interviewing...
the immature comment would start..
why, you do not like us..
you do not like our university,
etc.
and IMMEDIATELY he would lose the control over the team...and SHOULD HE WERE TO NOT LEAVE,
it would all still be over.
the only way/the best way for the UNIVERSITY is for him ti deny or deflect everything.
if/when he leaves, the team is still solid and a "unity", if he did it the other way, the team would split loyalties.

Its not particularly hard to explain. Big boy college football is by and large an insular club. guys with pedigrees from big schools get jobs other guys are left out in the cold.

He sure wouldn't take the bowl game off. The biggest game in their schools history, isn't it?
If I were a coach I would just be straight forward with my team. Yes, I am being interviewed for the coaching job at ND. They have strong interest and to be honest I'm interested in it also. But right now I'm still your coach and we're going to finish what we started, an undefeated season.

You are assuming that Kelly (or any coach in his shoes) has the leverage in the negotiations. I'm sure in this case ND said: "we will offer you (doubling your salary) to coach here as long as you leave immediately to start the ND job." So Kelly was faced with staying with Cincy, or biting the bullet and leaving early to coach at ND where he'd get paid twice as much.
Not ideal for Kelly, but a no-brainer. You're idea is noble, but it's not realistic in some of these negotiations.
