ESPN is reporting this now, too
Huge news for SMU. I am sure I'll be hammered by fans of other Texas schools, but it's difficult to not imagine SMU having a respectably high ceiling. The school has a ton of money, nice stadium (for its size), some tradition, and the campus looks like a country club. It's nicer than any campus I've ever been on. Plus it's located in fertile recruiting grounds amidst hiring a coach with arguably the best Texas high school ties in the country.
I also heard they're going all out with their new indoor practice facility.
off topic, but I also was told by a friend there that SMU is going to add lacrosse. That would be wise given the school's Northeast draw and the growing popularity of lacrosse in the South. definite championship contender there

Because of it's conference affiliation it will always be a backup for TX HS recruits and a stepping stone for up and coming coaches. Kids want to play ball in the Big 12 and SEC and coaches want to coach in the same. If Morris is successful he will eventually leave for a major job at A&M, UT, OU etc
As far as non P5 schools go I agree it might be the best of those jobs

I'm sure you're right, but there's nothing wrong with being a consistent stepping stone school. I think their biggest issue is being in a market that's already taken by TCU, which is why they'll never get a Big 12 bid. However, we really don't know what Chad Morris is looking for. It's safe to say he turned down a couple of power 5 offers to take the job. Nice salary, nice location, and no pressure.
Plus, if he's as good as I think he is, SMU might dish out serious cash to keep him. Private schools down the road will struggle with enrollment since parents are looking more for value these days. Look at LSU, A&M, and Bama. Application number SKYROCKET when the football team is good. Just something to think about.

Agree with everything here. SMU is an excellent non P5 job, maybe the best actually. As long as he can consistently get to bowl games there won't be a lot of pressure either

No doubt SMU can pay probably more than any non P5 out there. I'm sure he wouldn't just jump at any P5 job but if he wins consistently one of the big schools in the area will come calling. Because he went to A&M he will always be a hot name with our fans and boosters as long as he's winning and successful. SMU is a good enough job that he can afford to sit back and wait on one of those destination jobs though

I think their long term goal is to eventually try to get into an expanded Pac-12 or ACC.
I know a ton of people here would scoff at the notion but I wouldn't be against them joining a 16 team SEC and being in a 4 team pod with A&M, LSU, and Arkansas. The idea of University Park NIMBYs having to deal with SEC fans invading Gerald J. Ford Stadium is just glorious.

I've always enjoyed going to the A&M games there. I like playing SMU

The UP would cringe if that happened. They would start clamoring to play in Jerry World thinking they could really be something.
I would like them to play one game there a year, TCU or the Teammate Killers.

Best thing they did was get June out, yes they're bad now but it's not a shamble like Arkansas was for 1 reason, it was an expected clearing out and level who they compete with.
Yeah, they expected and planned for him to quit midway through the season. That's always the best way to get rid of someone.
And June was the best coach y'all have had post death-penalty. This is a Southern Miss level athletic department in terms of dumbassery.

June was decent early on but he flat out quit trying the last several years. TBH w/how much SMU has put into the program trying to turn things around its actually quit pathetic that June couldn't get more than 8 wins in a season. Any halfway decent coach should have been able to get his results once they started to actually give a shite about football. The only dumb thing they did regarding him was not canning his arse last year. (and some would argue it should have been done when he tried to run off to Arizona St in 2011)
