You're right, there is a big difference, however he could have easily told them no privately and publicly for that matter today and he didn't.

The man was paid 500,000. If that ain't enough, I say let him go. He sounds way too wishy washy for me to stomach.
While Chavis is good, he is not great and I personally think he was overpaid.
I sure hope we didn't offer a mega raise to stay. I mean, if he needs a raise to make him stay after being at LSU for only one year, then I say don't let the door hit your arse on the way out.

So if the rival company to yours came and offered you a significant raise (let's say they top whatever your current boss offered by 200k)... you wouldn't even consider it?

Maybe this counter-offer stuff is a face-saving move on the part of Alleva, Miles, Chavis, and the whole department. It also buys Chavis some time to make the announcement after the Bowl game.
"We made an offer to keep a great coach, but money wasn't the sticking point. It was a personal decision on the part of Coach Chavis. We'll miss him, and we wish him well in his new job.... blah blah blah..."

Hey, if Chavis is offered 200k more than he makes at LSU, I'd tell him to run, don't walk out the door.
I'm not down on Chavis for getting an offer to make more. I'm just saying 500k is top dollar for a DC at LSU or any other BCS top 25 program.
It's like being at an auction, and if I'm LSU, I'm saying 500k is about as much as I want to pay. Any more is just plain stupid.

Yeah, salaries are just skyrocketing right now though. Maybe they are trying to be ahead of the curve, throw a boatload at him so that this issue NEVER comes up again.

It is more likely that Chavis is being advised or on his own posturing for a pay raise, and Georgia is using Chavis as leverage against those they are truly targeting.
I never followed coaching as a business until Saban left. Every discussion I have had since then with a member of our athletic administration that I know has included the phrase "it's a business."
I stopped following the NFL for this reason, and I'm wondering what the future holds in regards to college football and my rooting interests.

If LSU is seriously upping his Salary, they are fricking idiots. There is NO reason to give him more thatn $450,000. There are head coaches that don't even make that much. Chavis is a good DC, but he's not at top 5 DC. That's who you pay that money to. Also, Why give him a raise if there is a possibility Miles may be gone (small I know) after next season?
