Charlie Mac - the most loyal LSU ambassador of all time

He was proud to be here. He made everyone proud to be Tigers. This was his dream job.....haven't had that sentiment since.

I was thinking about that this morning as well. Great Coach and great man! I had thought that Coach Miles had some of Macs qualities but I was wrong.

I have no problem with Miles loving his alma mater, but he is being paid by LSU and has had a team ranked #1 twice this season. He may have that opportunity again to possibly win the NC but he may not as well. Had LSU not brought Miles here and he were still at Oklahoma State, I don't think Miles would be considered for the Michigan job. As the week has progressed and the rumors have flown, if they are true, then I am disappointed. Disappointed because to me the dream job in coaching would be to have a team ranked #1 in the running to play for the NC. If a coach that has that can't focus on something like that, well, he really isn't that great of a coach.
Cholly Mac was a UK alum but never talked about going back there. Unfortunately there are very few men that have the character of Cholly Mac.

It is hard to find the right combination of character and ability, very hard. He had it and it wasn't fully appreciated until he was fired. Fired for "not winning enough". We sure showed him.

I understand your feeling. But let me point out that it seems you start out earlier assuming theae rumors are true. THen you say the big "if". IN this statement We don't know if nay of these rumors are true. I suspect they are not.
Charlie was loyal to the LSU fan base. IN the end his loyalty was not enough and he got fired. I understand character but I wonder if Miles had a average season if the people would be out with pitchforks
ANyway as to character I know this. We have a Coach that has one job he would leave. COmpare this to Tommy Tubervillew who is bargining with everybody.
At the end of the day and after looking a the facts that we have. I think Miles has done this right

Actually, Cholly Mac came very close to taking the head coaching job at Kentucky in early 1962. He was offered the job when Blanto Collier was fired there, but Jim Corbett, LSU's AD at the time prevailed upon him to take the LSU job instead (see Peter Finney's account at pages 264-265, The Fighting Tigers, Seventy -five Years of LSU Football )

Yeah- and the cheer of the day was, "Help Mac Pack". And the man had U-haul rentals parked in front of his house on more than one occasion. Just saying...
Think he was a good man...However, beating Rice by 40-70 points and losing to Bama EVERY year and finishing 8-3...did get a little redundant!
We pretty much always beat who we were suppose to...and pretty much never beat who we weren't suppose to!

No, we yelled "Help Mac Pack"...and, his loved or loyalty for LSU was never questioned...only his coaching and recruiting.

I was at LSU during the dark years ('89-'94) and I guess that makes me less critic of Cholly. Besides I knew coach Pevey and think the world of him.

Thats pretty insightful. Cholly Mac was the coach when I entered LSU. I have to admit I was a help Mac pak guy a lot of the time. I thought it was just time for him to move on.
However when LSU hired Dietzel as AD to run off MAc I was embarassed amd disgusted that LSU did this to the man. I later learened from a family I knew that knew him very well that he was a very fine man.
When I witnessed Dietzel chastise the student section at an LSUvKentucky basketball game for booing Kentucky I knew we had hired a putz and we where in deep doo doo. I believe our ten bad years of miserable football was Karma paying us back for treating Mac the way he was treated.
He should have been made AD. I offer his success at running the Citrus bowl and the football coaches association as evidence that he would have at least been am adequate ad, better than that pious boob Dietzel.

Remember when he was AD. We had the glut of purple and gold Rabbit Jackets. OMG. Those things were so ugly that only a Vietnamese crack whore would wear them.

Got some news for you sonnyboy. EVERYBODY lost to Alabama in those days. LSU wone a couple and was closer in games than anyone else that played bama every year. Unfortunately, that was not enough for the idiots who call themselves LSU fans. No coach was or is ever good enough. LSU should never lose a game, ever. Those people were the fathers and uncles of the "Miles can't coach" jackasses who inhabit this board.

Charlie MacClendon was a great head coach.
CM was an all american under Paul Bryant and Paul Dietzel at Kentucky.
CM's courage won the 1951 Sugar Bowl for Kentucky and made Paul Bryant's boast to the committee who selects Sugar Bowl teams stand up

(the greatest Sugar Bowl I've read about for I was not around in 1951)

Dietzel was the best football coach LSU ever had, but the second to worst AD.
