I was one on the minority who loved Charlie Mac. I attended LSU 75-79. We would go out and get a lead against Bama but Bear would just wear us done in the second half.
Some of the best games that where played in Death Valley happened during this time frame. The 6-6 tie to Neb when they where #1 the '79 USC game and the 79 3-0 lose to Bama. Unfortunately I did not get to go to the USC game because my brother got married that day. Ended up divorcing the bitch a few years later.
To this day I call him on September 29 and remind him he made me miss the game for nothing!

Apparently there was a lot of punting on third down in the 59 ole miss game. I read that in some book about lsu, but I forgot the name of it. It might have been "game of my life". If the weather was bad or the field was sloppy, coaches would often punt on third down and take their chances with the defense.

I loved Cholly Mac and was sick, sick, sick at how he was treated. He would have made LSU a great AD, along the lines of Jim Corbett (legendary). But instead, the same fools who wanted the golden Dietzel back have children crying out for the return of Saban. I am convinced that it was this instability in the LSU fan/leadership base that led to the very dark years of LSU football. Why do we want to tempt fate and repeat history? Why treat Les Miles like yesterday's wet newspaper? He's led LSU through three consecutive 10 win seasons, and no other coach can make that claim. Les Miles is a very decent man and a very good coach; if he somehow does not go to UM, then we may have one who will stay at LSU a long time. And no, we will not win the MNC every year, not the SECCG annual winner, or even the SEC West. There is strong competition in the SEC and LSU is one among many serious football teams. A strong, steady coach like Les Miles will take LSU further than a lot of in and out coaches we've known.
But all that said, I think it's looking like Les is going to get his dream job at Ann Arbor. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy. So LSU has to get off the bandwagon campaigns that push this or that next coach and let the process lead us to the next great LSU coach, hopefully one who will love LSU and want to stay a long, long time.

this to be true would have to be accomplished through secondary representatives. This likely was not the parties directly affected to remain within contractual agreements. I accepted this reading as true then as I do today.

I was just making an observation based on my memories of that time...not passing judgment!
Not sure if it was your intent to lump me in with the "idiots" or not. However, use the Search feature and read some of my post. I have been one of the biggest supporters of coach Miles on this board. I've also preached against unrealistic expectations and thinking you can win every game.

It's not an urban legend. I was at LSU in the late 50s and early 60s, and saw both Dietzel and Mac punt on 3rd down many times - also saw LSU opponents punt on 3rd down alot [in the famous 59 game against Ole Miss, Johnny Vaught had the Rebels punting on 1st down at times - figuring the Tigers couldn't score against their defense].
I many times joined in the booing at TS when the Tigers would go into punt formation on 3rd down.

In the late 50 and early 60's it wasn't uncommon, in the 59 LSU game Ole Miss was punting on 1st 2nd and third downs to get good field position and wait for an offensive error. The nature of the game was different and not as much offense. Quick kicking on third down isn't a legend.

I can't recall the specific game, but I know it occurred as late as the mid to late 70s. I remember, because of how it was one of the first times I saw my father nearly blow a gasket.
He never liked Charley Mac. I guess I'm one of those kids, a prior poster is referring to. Although, I challenge him to find one post of mine, really critical of Miles.
