Can a head coach be demoted and not fired to avoid a buyout situation?

Probably breach of contract to do that. The contract is for a head coaching position. Not just an employee of a school.

If the demotion comes with a reduction in pay, no.

Seems like it would be a pay issue . I don’t think LSU could afford to demote O back to DL coach .

It's probably stipulated somewhere in the contract that says that can't happen. I'm sure somebody would have tried that by now to get out of a buyout if it was doable.

Simple answer: it depends on what the contract says. Typically, a contract would not permit that unless he is demoted for cause (having breached a specific provision of the contract). But contracts can be negotiated by the parties in any number of ways.

You probably don't want to keep a demoted head coach on the staff anyway.

Otherwise, the contract is a guarantee of income, not job duties. So you'd have to replace endorsement and photo op income, plus pay the contract itself. So you'd be paying a position coach $3 million a year.

Sure if you want to pay him his full salary for the life of the contract
