He did well at G5 schools before, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this worked out. Some aren’t made to be head coaches at major colleges.

He also coached at Cincinnati, which is a "major college" (good lord) and which at the time was a member of the Big East, a BCS league at that time.
Just like a school that loses its coach every 3 or so years will eventually hire a dud, a coach who job hops will eventually land somewhere where it doesn't work out.

The Big East wasn’t really considered by most as deserving to be referred to as a major conference then. Miami and Virginia Tech had left around 2002 and Pitt and Syracuse were on their way out. Football wise, I wouldn’t say Cincinnati was a “major college”. Cincinnati was one of the schools that were raided from Conference USA in 2005.
