Great hire. Rumor is Van Gorder was going to be Mike Smith's scape goat in Atl. However, everyone knows the problem is Mike Smith and the offense.

This is an A+ hire as he was great at UGA.

This news shocks the hell out of me to be honest. BVG is an NFL DC or a D1 HC...surprised to see him come to Auburn.

Feel the exact same way. Excited as hell though.

Agreed. I figure it's one of two things:

1. Hates the NFL and wants to be a college DC again.

2. Hates the NFL and wants to be a college HC soon.

Guy looks like he moves around a lot, but all of these guys do.....

AUBURN -- A veteran defensive coordinator with SEC and NFL experience will join Auburn’s staff.

Brian VanGorder, formerly the defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons, has been hired by Auburn coach Gene Chizik. VanGorder has a total of five years of NFL experience including the last four with the Falcons.

VanGorder, 52, was the defensive coordinator for Georgia from 2001-04. His Bulldog defense was ranked fourth in scoring defense in 2002, third in 2003 and eighth in 2004. His 2003 defense allowed less than 15 points per game as Georgia won the Sugar Bowl and finished No. 3 in the AP poll.

In 2010, the Falcons defense finished 10th in the NFL in rushing defense allowing 105.9 yards per game, which ranked fifth in the NFC

Maybe, but that happened awfully quick for this to have not been in the works for a while. Seems more like the decision had been made some time ago an just waiting on the Falcons' season to end for an announcement. Who knows?

This isn't a homerum hire for Auburn, it's a grand fricking slam. You could make the case that BVG was one of the top 3 or 4 assistant coaches in UGA history.

I wouldnt' put too much stock in his time in the NFL, it's SUCH a different game (look Saban, Carroll, Weis, etc). But what he did from 01-04 with UGA was nothing short of phenomenal. In those 4 years, UGA's defense allowed 30 points to an opponent ONCE. One time, and it was in the 03 SECCG to the national champions.

I am now officially worried about auburn. It doesn't help that VanGorder vs Bobo is about as big of a mismatch as a bear vs a guinea pig.

I know Spurrier isn't taking him from you. But the NFL might. Spurrier already had him for a couple of weeks. It's in the article I linked. That's why I said get him under contract before a better NFL offer pops up.

Don't know how he can be used as a scapegoat when his defense scored the only points yesterday against the Giants .

WG, would you trade Grantham for BVG? I don't think i would, but it's seriously close man. This kinda pisses me off but i'm happy for BVG...just a bummer

He will likely go back to the NFL at some point but not for a few years.
