Bama's new Offensive Coordinator

A lot of Bama fans won't like this but I think it is a strong possibility that Mike Groh gets promoted from WR coach to OC.
It is no secret that Saban is not the easiest guy to work for and this makes a national search for a big name difficult. Promoting from within maintains continuity and keeps the assistants working hard and willing to put in the hours in hopes of landing a coordinator position at a future date. I think you also see Sal Sunseri promoted to DC when Smart leaves.
Groh was the OC at UVA for a few years, then a GA at Bama for a year, then QB coach at Louisville for a year and was hired back last year to be the WR coach at Bama. Something tells me Saban liked him and lured him back with a promise that he would be considered for the OC job when McElwain left.

You better pray to big baby jeebus that Bama doesn't hire Mike Groh if you plan on having a functioning offense.

It's still mainly Saban's philosophy and the talent level isn't falling off. Mike Groh could do well as OC.

i'm not doubting it's his philosophy, but what explains the 2007 scheme?... shot gun/four wide/etc.?... personnel?... the players weren't a whole lot different in 08, but the scheme was a total 180 degrees once McElwain was hired.

A 175 pound RB and his oft-injured back-up, Glen Coffee (who was still out of shape at the time). Alabama actually was deep at WR when Saban took the job (one of the few positions on the team in 2007 that was). The 2008 recruiting class, and some further development helped Alabama move more to what Saban wanted.

And I'll add, it's why Saban's 2000-01 LSU offense didn't resemble those in his last three years. Contrary to popular belief, he will tailor to his talent. However, his ideal offense are those you saw in 2003 and 2004 at LSU, or 2008-present at Alabama.

Not every thing that happened at LSU, because Saban coached there, is doomed to be repeated at Alabama. I'm willing to give Mike Groh a chance. That being said, LSU wasn't helped in 2008 with QB problems.

I not sure how you think I was drawing a parallel between Saban and what LSU went through in 2008. No more than I felt there's a parallel between Crowton at LSU in 2008-10, and the potential of Mike Groh at Alabama moving forward. That all being said, LSU's lack of offensive success compounded any problems on defense. Y'all did have new co-DCs afterall in 2008.

my point was saban's philosophy and the "talent level" doenst have all that much to do with on field success. great talent cannot overcome poor coaching and play calling.
lsu hired 2 incompetent fools as Co-DCs in 08 and despite top notch talent the defense was pretty awful.
fairly similar parallel can be drawn to what will happen with the Alabama offense if groh is hired. have fun with that, though.

We won't know for sure, though. Saban has been pretty damn spot on with his OC hires over the years. If it's not working out, he's not going to stick with someone for 2-3 years (Applewhite was gone after one season).

Anyone on Petrino's offensive staff who knows it well would be approved of by me. His offense is the best I have seen in the SEC in a long time when it comes to balancing an explosive passing game with power runs that sustain drives and keep the D off the field. Combine that offense with Bama's OL and it could be awesome.
