Arkansas should look at Fuente

Lots of smoke in the coaching world that Fuente is looking to get out of Blacksburg. I’d walk that dog for sure.

This is actually a great idea.
We’d somehow manage to frick it up though and he’d leave VT to take an assistant job at Texas instead.

I will always appreciate Fuente for what he did at Memphis. He can definitely build a program.
That said, the problem with him is he isn’t a big time recruiter and doesn’t seem to be interested in becoming one. That’s one of the big reasons he’s in the position he’s in at VT. Beamer proved you can recruit enough talent there to win in the ACC, so he doesn’t have an excuse on that front.
Two years ago. I would have absolutely agreed with this recommendation. Today, while he’s probably better than most if not all of the guys Arkansas is looking at, for the money and buyout it would take to get him, it’s a risk. If he didn’t up his recruiting game by orders of magnitude, he wouldn’t cut it in the SEC West.

It depends on how you look at it. I’m not sure a Norvell could have performed the program resurrection that Fuente did. I mean, that was a pretty incredible feat that not all coaches, even good ones, are cut out for. Maybe he could have, but that’s hard to know.
That said, I agree that Norvell is the better coach for where Memphis is today. I believe he’s taken them further than Fuente would have if he had stayed, especially in recruiting.
I think these two arrived in Memphis at the perfect time to do what each did best. I just hope the administration can nail the next hire just as well.

Head coach just hired Former Mizzou head coach to be his defense coordinator! Why he do that if he is looking elsewhere?

VT isn’t firing Fuente after he salvaged the season and there is no guarantee that a job he would be willing to leave for opens up at this point. He and Odom also have a great history together from Memphis. If you are losing a guy like Bud Foster, you could do a hell of a lot worse than getting Barry Odom to replace him.
These rumors could be just idle chatter, or they could date back to earlier in the season when Fuente’s seat was pretty warm. Either way, I doubt he leaves and VT would be insane to pay his buyout with so few good candidates available.
