Probably not attainable but worth a shot:

1. Gus Malzahn
2. Mike Gundy
3. Justin Fuente
4. Jeff Brohm (unlikely to leave Purdue after just 1 season)
5. Matt Campbell (something like $10M buyout)

Attainable:

1. Mike Leach
2. Mike Norvell
3. Lane Kiffin
4. Chad Morris
5. Dino Babers
6. Brent Venables

11/25 update: Scratched Gary Patterson off first list as he signed extension with TCU.

11/27 update: Added Brent Venables.

Norvell seems like a solid fit. Leach would be awesome. Lane would make me jealous

Lane is the one guy who could maybe break down the recruiting wall Arky has to deal with.

JMO, but if I'm Arkansas, I wait a year to hire a new HC, way too many big time openings to compete with, not to mention some that have yet to be official

official:

Florida
Tennessee
Ole Miss

potential openings:
Nebraska
Texas A + M
UCLA

Too late, there is a zero chance this happens now with Long gone.

Norvell is a shoe in. Think he would be a great hire and obviously a good fit.

If Gus wants to go home then you will have to match AU and sign him to the state maximum contract simply because what he's stepping into isn't guaranteed to be successful and certainly won't be easy. I'm just not sure that's a great move for him or Arkansas right now, a lot of risk for both parties.

I think this is entirely dependent on the next few weeks. If Auburn implodes and gets plowed by Bama, maybe you take your shot and make a hard run at Gus. If not then you wait a year, bring in some top notch recruiters and focus on stocking the cabinet.

I think you have to look at how unstable AU is and know that within the next year you will absolutely be able to make that hire if it's what you really want. They are good this year, we will see where they top out. Next year they are probably back to 7-8 wins and you can get your guy. Just make sure he knows not to push for an extension this go around.

Are you sure BB gets the hook? I could see a situation where he is given another year due to upheaval at the AD spot.

If anything, it points the opposite direction. At least that is what most of the media and fans believe. Long was a big Bert fan.

Our AD was fired because big money wants a change in the football Head Hog...

Bert's done

This move tells me they have a HC targeted with a deal in the works

is Auburn unstable? no disrespect, but I'd be shocked if malzahn goes to arkansas. lower ceiling, not to mention he'd have less to work with

auburn fans may not wanna hear this, but they have to realize that even winning 2 out of 5 against Saban (for however long he coaches), is GREAT. if Saban wins one more NC, he's the GOAT, all things considered

like I said, if I'm arkansas, it's gonna be a tough 12 months, but for long term progress, I would think it's better to get one of your top choices next year as opposed to getting a coach in their 3rd or 4th tier this year

We aren't going after the same coaches most likely...do you gauge interest...sure? But in reality each program is looking for the right fit because you can't afford to frick up this round
