There a lot of reasons he went to Notre Dame.
1. He's a midwest guy.
2. Brian Kelly's job is more secure than Ed O. If Kelly leaves, it's likely his own decision and Freeman would be consider a replacement.
3. He has experience recruiting that area.
4. He can likely pick his entire defensive staff, unlike here.

Wife probably also just preferred raising six young kids around Notre Dame than LSU. Especially with no ties to the area.

Literally every indication was he liked LSU more but the wife really wanted to stay up there if at all possible. It happens.
Just a guess, but this makes the most sense to me. Happy wife happy life

I hope Freeman is not making mistake for the following reasons:
1. Kelly is notorious for treating his assistants poorly
2. He could be a hero if can build LSU’s defense back
3. LSU has a higher ceiling for National Championships thank does ND
4. Warmer weather in Baton Rouge

Dandydon this morning had a good article about Freeman wanting to be close to family so good for him. We never need to hire a coach who wants to be somewhere else.

The best Analogy that I’ve heard Some fans are feeling like the bride left at the altar when In reality, it’s more like the lady that turned down the marriage proposal. I know nothing about this guy, but I cannot believe he is the only be-all to end all. The only fit for this team. I just want Orgeron to take his time and hire the best fit for the LSU program.

I'm positive we were willing to offer him MUCH more money than Notre Dame was.
I don't really know why Brian Kelly makes what he reportedly makes, because ND has its fair share of absurdly wealthy boosters willing to burn money in the program.

If he's truly a great coach, his future would benefit just as much being at Notre Dame as it would being at LSU.
How many good offenses will ND face each years? How many good offenses will LSU face each year?
As a DC for ND, you have to be on top of your game for 1 or 2 games a year. At LSU you have to be on top of your game about 7 games a year. Do good at ND, and he could be in line for a HC job. Do average at LSU and he is looking for another job.

Based on what? You have no idea what ND is paying him or what LSU offered.
A wealthy ND booster endowed the DC position up there—it’s likely ND offered him the same, or more money than LSU.

This we can agree on. ND’s last DC got an SEC head coaching job in the SEC, LSU’s got a head coaching job in the Big12. Freeman was already interviewing for at least one power 5 HC gigs based on his time at Cincinnati. LSU provided no more opportunity to springboard him than any other big-time program.

Do yall think Freeman used every bit of his "close to home" leverage to get the highest number possible out of Kelly? I just can't shake the feeling that we were used.
No. Unlike O, a lot of coaches do their due diligence. They gather all of the information they can, weigh their options, and make a decision.
Assuming he didn’t take a huge discount to go to ND, Freeman made the right choice. Brian Kelly isn’t going anywhere in the next few years, has ND playing in the playoffs, and fielded a top 25 defense last year.
O will be run out of town if he has another bad season, just fielded the worst defense in school history, and is starting to show a bad track record when it comes to handling his assistants.

Or maybe he's just a guy exploring some very good options at top programs and wanted to give it a good look before making a highly important personal decision for his career and his family. Every source I read prior to his decision indicated that Notre Dame was his likely landing spot but LSU was a strong possibility. Sometimes things just don't work out the way you wanted them to. Sometimes it's a number of factors that have NOTHING to do with the HC or LSU. Sometimes people just make a decision because that's what they feel is best for them. Time is much better used looking ahead and not backwards.

lsu’s is a laughing stock...the best they could do last season was overpay a a guy who nobody wanted.
if lsu is as glamorous as you say it is why aren’t the best DC and defensive position coaches lined up for an interview?
only reason is because lsu pays out more than other teams would, that’s the only selling point

Get your head out of your arse. Every pundit out there began reporting he was going to LSU. The UC mods said he was going to LSU. Reports that he met with team and they said he said he was going to LSU. Those indications...
