Sumlin has a $15 million buyout
between that and buyouts for chavis and a brand new OC, not to mention the new coach and his staff, they would basically have to give away well over $20M. no one is gonna do that.
aggie fans try to spin it as, "well we're gonna lose more than that if we keep playing like this", but its the boosters who have to pay that money, not the school, its not an investment for them, they wont ever see any kind of return, theyre just giving away money.
tldr: enjoy year 6 under sumlin

Next year is shaping up to be a lost year with what we have leaving and no QB. 9-4 is the best case scenario for this year and 8-5 is a very real possibility with how we are playing. Next year could be a struggle to make a bowl game and I don't see any way he survives next year
The momentum for us will be so negative I would rather do it now and have the shine of new coach and fresh start guide us through the recruiting trail during what will be a tough year next year. Otherwise we could have a couple of really rough classes between this year and next

And that's different from when they fired Sherman after 2011?
He still had 2 years left on his contract, and was in the 2nd year of a new defensive coordinator (Tim DeRuyter) and year 4 of the most overpaid offensive coordinator in football.
When Franchione was fired after 2007, he still had 3 years left on his contract and he purposely sat on his fat arse and didn't even attempt to find a new job, collecting a paycheck through 2010.
When Slocum was fired after 2002, he still had 3 years left on his contract.

ironically, it comes down to recruiting. for a program that prides itself on that whole #wrts bs, that's what it will come down to.
defensive recruiting is lackluster at all positions. that's something we warned you about with Chavis, he's a lazy motherfricker when it comes to recruiting and he needs elite position coaches that can double as elite recruiters.

I agree on all counts. I want a coach that is serious about building a culture of toughness on our team, and makes running the football and stopping the run priorities. Sumlin has never struck the right balance on his staff with coaches who can recruit and coaches who can develop players.

He recruited the only linebacker in this past class as well as a pretty damn good safety. Both from Tennessee. He was also responsible for Daylon Mack.
Our most inept coach, Clarence McKinney, who is supposed to be our "ace recruiter" has amounted to a whole lot of nothing over the last 5 years except to keep Sumlin lazy.

Not sure I've seen anyone really develop under one of his assistants except for Jim Turner.

Does he need to be fired? Yes. Absolutely. But it can't be done this year.
Next season is going to be very bad for A&M regardless of the coach. We have a lot of talent graduating or leaving for the NFL and no QB.
The smart play here given the buyout and what's in store in terms of record next season is give him next year to let him just totally destroy himself, then fire him with a much reduced buyout. That way, we catch no flack for making the wrong decision and save ourselves money. Also, that way we don't ruin our new coach in the first year, since not even Saban could have a good season with the talent we'll have and no QB.

The damage the end of this year and next year with a lame duck head coach could do to our recruiting will cripple the roster. Waiting is not smart if we want to actually compete for championships at some point, which is why we will probably do it
