people were bashing the idea of Dan Mullen, when his resume and Herman's are basically mirror images.
watch herman's team. they are disciplined, they are poised, they are situationally aware. they know the details LSU has increasingly lacked

I'm with you, but the counter argument is....who have they played? Mullen has been coaching/recruiting in the SEC W, the toughest DIV in CFB. Where has Herman been coaching, and who have they been playing? All I'm saying is, put Mullen at LSU with our facilities, staff, recruiting base, etc....and I think he would do well. Again, Herman and Fisher would be my top two...but Mullen IMO is not a bad candidate at all behind them.

cmon, man. 94 games in the sec west vs. 18 in the American west. herman appears to be great, but this is apples/oranges.

Other advantages that fly under the radar:
1) he is extremely supportive of his collective staff (coaches/GAs/office aides/etc). He allows them the freedom to do their job. Everyone working for UH football would run through a wall for him, just like his players.
2) I said this last year when Miles almost got canned, but he is the most complete recruiter I haver seen. He has been to my office on every coaching stop he has made. Comparing him to other assistant and HC who have stopped by and it's not even close. To this day, he is remembers everyone by name of the people inolved in recruiting a kid (principals, guidance counsellors, assistant FB coaches, etc). I know at least half dozen other schools who have the same story about him.
3) he has all of the skills and track record to be the next Saban of CFB. Mock me all you want, but Saban is gold standard for CFB the last 2 decades and no one would have predicted that when he left Michigan State.
Ask yourself this, what would scare you most to land at Alabama? Tom Herman and his growing legacy or a Jimbo/Petrino/Briles plug-in-play? I gotta go with HCTH

not with wins/losses vs. competition. i was talking about coaching tree, ascendency in the ranks/career, success as an oc and qb developer. I cant say someone is hands down better based solely on an 18-1 record in the American west.

I'm not saying that makes him purely better, but there are distinct differences in their resumes. Most notably, their position and record as HCs.

Here is a really good, albeit long interview with Herman. It's a really good listen to how detail oriented the guy is and what type of work he was willing to put in just to get his foot in the door. LINK

To be fair to Rich Rod he was never going to succeed in Ann Arbor. There were too many people against him from the start.

Tom Herman has been successful everywhere he has gone. His scheme is very college friendly aka he doesn't need a first rd stud Qb to make it effective. He has a diverse passing scheme that's spread out and incorporates a power running game into his spread concepts. He has won a National Championship with a 3d string Qb (and destroyed bama's defense in the process) that wasn't nearly as effective once Herman left and he has gone 17-1 at Houston while beating Florida state and Oklahoma convincingly with a 5'10 converted Wr playing Qb.
That's what makes him better than the two mentioned. Rich Rod's offense isn't capable of chewing up clock which leaves his defense on the field longer so that's why his defenses usually struggle. Malzahn's offense is mainly a gimmick which is why people have figured it out and he doesn't score much. His running game is basically a wing T concept ran from the shot gun.
Herman is none of that, he will be great where ever he goes.

Now it is more a comment on the recruiting Houston has done prior to him getting there, but he has continued to give a shite about defense.

Living in the Houston area this guy has energized this city for the Cougs like nothing I have ever seen before.
Herman's offense isn't like those other coaches you listed he has a legit power running game elements on top of the passing elements we are not use to seeing in Baton Rouge.

Herman is a risk like the rest and anyone is a fool to deny it. But he is a good risk and one that should be taken.
People like to bash on Rich Rod but he was the right move at the time and Gus has won a SEC title.
