Its happening, they picked a guy that is a lifelong fan and wrote for Chuck and Agents of SHEILD as the showrunner, have some bigger Exec Producers on it, and Amazon is partnering with Sony on it.

Finally, happening. Official press releases and all.

Honestly, I do not know how they can do it without changing a lot. It is simply too big, too much extraneous crap in it, and too "wholesome". They'll need to cut out a lot of subplots and extraneous characters, condense it down from 14 books down to 7-8 seasons...and amp up the violence/language/sex a bit.

But I have faith they can pull it off.

I am going in with low expectations so I don't disspoint myself.

That said, I've been following this potential for so long, i cant believe it is really happening.

Hope they don't change too much to cater to changes and don't go all game of thrones for sex and violence. I know that will get a bigger audience but I want to see the story I read when i was young.

ETA: Agents of SHIELD is a great show, so I feel good about the guy they picked.

Ya, color me cautious about this as well.

However I will say there is TONS of room to trim the overall story down.

I mean cutting out the *sniff* and *hair tug*s alone will probably cut out 200k words.

plus on screen you can do a simultaneous sniff and hair tug to save time.

So so many pages are dedicated to complete mind-numbing detail of the smallest thing, like dresses. That can be shown on screen and you cut out 100s of pages.

Plus there are so many plotpoints that are worthless. Elayne's whole throne manuevering, Faile's exploits, Aes Sedai machinations, etc etc etc. I mean all that shite is worthless to the main plot and can just go away.

Rafe Judkins already said that a LOT of condensing will take place in the middle books. Books 8-11 can take up 1 season.

I was re-reading these recently for the first time in many years, and my exact thought while reading this was if this was adapted for TV, 5 books worth of Elayne's plot point could be condensed into one scene.

Spoilers

Her riding into Caemlyn and ascending the throne. The end. No one would give a frick or question anything else. She's the heir. She's on the throne. The end.

Definitely - up through Book 7 (i think, hard to remember since its been a while) there was a lot of movement / actions.

I can easily see Book 1 and 2 being condensed into one season. From then, just talking about Rand, he goes to Tear, through the waste with all the aciton in there, across the spine to Cairhein and eventually into Caemlyn - which goes through book 6 I believe.

Book 8 (Winter's Heart I think), and that area where Faile is prison is when there just wasn't a ton of movement.

And the last book is essentially just one long battle scene - that certainly won't be how it is represented on the big screen. I'd say the last two books can also be easily condensed into a single season.

Could really be largely centered around Rand, Mat and Egwene IMO. Nyn and Perrin and Moraine strong secondary center archs - probably takes care of almost all important plot points with those archs.

Certainly have a good amount of scenes with other people, but those could probably take care of most of it.

They are doing Book 1 as the first season, that is confirmed. It sounds like Moiraine will start off as being the "main" character, and I think that is kind of a wise choice to preserve the suspense as to who the central character really is.

I mentioned this in another thread but I saw a Redditor kind of break things down as to how things could be condensed. Book 1 on its own. 2 and 3 condensed to one season, 4 and parts of 5, parts of 5 and all of 6 ending with Dumai's wells, then elements of 7-11 being condensed to 2 seasons, and then 12-14 taking 2 seasons at most. That's 8 seasons, and it probably could be done in 7.

Also one thing that gave me some pause was that the showrunner went on a good bit about some SJW nonsense. Ethnic diversity, feminism etc etc. He said Egwene is his favorite character. I'm not sure how that is possible.

I wonder what kind of production schedule they will be looking at. I'm really excited about this but also afraid it may end up looking and translating very poorly.

They haven't said, and Judkins hasn't given much detail on that yet. However, he has been working on the scripts for season 1 and outline for the entire show for a year now. They are already heavily into that process and it sounds like they are ramping up the production crew. Amazon once they greenlight something tends to move fast. I think you'll see principal photography start up sometime in the Spring if I had to guess.

Ya, I was thinking it's about that time for a re-read as well. Just have to finally finish Oathbringer first.

I have read the first 7 books in the series a good five times, would do a re-read on occassion when a new book was getting released and I just love the first half of this series so much. The rest probably between two and 3 and the final one only once. Last one was right before final book came out.

I have several series i want to get through before though, gonna have to buckle down in the fall and get cranking.

Uh, yeah! Any chapter with Whitecloaks in it can be cut. Any chapter with the Seafolk can go as well. Don’t get me started on the various plot lines that can be eliminated in the Aes Sedai chapters.

I think you need to re-read the series If the show is done poorly Im gonna rage.

“You have chosen a good campsite, young man,” she said. “I have often used it on my way to Remen. There is a small spring nearby. I trust you have no objection to my sharing it?” Her guards were already dismounting, hitching at their sword belts and loosening saddle girths. “None,” Rand told her. Careful. Two steps brought him close enough, and he leaped into the air, spinning - Thistledown Floats on the Whirlwind, heron-mark blade carved from fire coming into his hands to take her head off before surprise could even form on her face. She was the most dangerous. He alighted as the woman’s head rolled from the crupper of her horse. The guards yelled and clawed for their swords, screamed as they realized his blade burned. He danced among them in the forms Lan had taught him, and knew he could have killed all ten with ordinary steel, but the blade he wielded was part of him. The last man fell, and it had been so like practicing the forms that he had already begun the sheathing called Folding the Fan before he remembered he wore no scabbard and this blade would have turned it to ash at a touch if he had.

Letting the sword vanish, he turned to examine the horses. Most had run away, but some not far, and the woman’s tall gelding stood with rolling eyes, whickering uneasily. Her headless corpse, lying on the ground, had maintained its grip on the reins, and held the animal’s head down.

Rand pulled them free, pausing only to gather his few belongings before swinging into the saddle. I have to be careful, he thought as he looked over the dead. No mistakes.

The Power still filled him, the flow from saidin sweeter than honey, ranker than rotted meat. Abruptly he channeled - not really understanding what it was he did, or how, only that it seemed right; and it worked, lifting the corpses. He set them in a line, facing him, kneeling, faces in the dirt. For those who had faces left.

Kneeling to him.

“If I am the Dragon Reborn,” he told them, “that is the way it is supposed to be, isn’t it?” Letting go of saidin was hard, but he did it.

By wholesome I mean by post-GOT modern standards.

There’s no cursing at all. Most of the characters are pretty innocent. Sex happens for the most part completely offscreen and is insinuated with a few notable exceptions.

The violence is mostly a bit cartoonish...but some scenes if done right would be incredibly violent.

Disagree about the whole violence thing, its all about tone and setting. Lots of people die, the ashaman literally rip peoples bodies apart.

I hope they don't insert pointless sex scenes and shite just cause they feel like they have to show tits. LOTR didn't have all that bullshite and people loved it - holds up on the strength of the story.
