What is the best history of the Soviet Union out there?

I am thinking of reading The Soviet Century by Moshe Lewin, but I'm wondering if there is a better one. I only want to read one.

I doubt there is a single volume that really does it justice.
A History of the Soviet Union from the Beginning to the End - Kenez, The Rise and Fall of the Soviet Union - McCauley, or your Lewin book may be the least bad options out there.

Very readable and from a Russian historian. Very interesting perspective. Got into the Soviet archives before Putin started restricting access.
His takes on Khrushchev, Brezhnev, and Gorbachev are pretty fresh.
Confirms that Stalin was a paranoid psychopath.

The Gulag Archipelago which has been referred to as the most important work of the 20th Century.
And then there is all the other books about the Soviet Union.

I though A Failed Empire was quite good, not sure why the downvotes.

Not the entire USSR, but the Gulag Archipelago is haunting and amazing.

It's a difficult read though. I couldn't finish it.

More like 200 Years Together. Which is by the same author is far more important.

English Translation of Alexander Solzhenitsyn's book 'Two Hundred Years Together'. The book is one of the most banned books in modern history.

Because it tells the truth about the people with power and money

Good listen as well. Blinkist has an extremely short audio version

The fact that he died on the floor, and no one wanted to go in the room and check on him because they were in fear of him, is sort of poetic. The older he got, the more he started losing his mind and ordering every one killed or imprisoned. Same sort of thing happened to Mao, except Mao's mind was lost due to syphillis.
