Any recommendations on Vietnam War books? I’m specifically interested in first hand accounts or fiction written by guys that were there.

My two favorites so far are Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes and The 13th Valley by John Del Vecchio.

I also liked The Things They Carried, Phantom Warriors by Gary Linderer, and Recondo by Larry Chambers.

I have Caputo’s book A Rumor of War, and started it once or twice but never got into it.

I just ordered Fields of Fire by James Webb. Anyone read this one or have any other suggestions similar to the ones I mentioned above?

Karnow's single volume, Vietnam remains my go to recommendation if you haven't read it. It is a survey of the conflict, but extraordinarily good.

First person accounts that are favorites of mine since ROTC - If I Die in a Combat Zone - by Tim O'Brien and Once a Warrior King - David Donovan, in addition to We Were Soldiers Once ... and Young, of course.

If you're interested in the political drama associated with the war, pick up: A Bright Shining Lie by Neal Sheehan.

It's the true story of an American Colonel --- John Paul Vann -- who was highly critical of the way we were fighting the war from the very beginning. It won the Pulitzer Prize.

As far as non-fiction goes, A Better War by Lewis Sorley is the most accurate book I’ve read regarding late 60s early 70 Vietnam War. (I was there.)

'Nam - Mark Baker

We Were Soldiers Once...And Young - LTG Hal Moore

Chicken Hawk - Robert Mason

The Killing Zone - Frederick Downs

Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam (also recommend the old HBO special. Pretty sure it's on Youtube)

You've mentioned most of my other favorites.

Second Chicken Hawk. One of those books that gets your heart pounding. Think I remember the author saying how he could feel the bullets hitting the shield through his heels. Crazy that he, or any of them, were able to keep their cool while hovering in that level of enemy fire.

Fields of Fire is a great book. fricking depressing, but great.
A Country Such As This is also a good Vietnam book by Webb. One of the characters is based on Murphy Neal Jones of Covington.

Tiger Force by Michael Sallah and Mitch Weiss. Great read about what happens when you create a special force within a special force, and essentially turn them loose. It shows how crazy things and people got under the stress they had on them, day in and day out.

Jim Webb is an interesting guy. As a marine in Vietnam he was awarded the Navy Cross, a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts. Then went on to become the Secretary of the Navy and a US Senator. And is an excellent author. Fields of Fire is outstanding. His The Emperor's General is another favorite of mine.
