Has anyone read these books? I finally caved and read them since my wife loved them. The first two books weren't bad at all. Not the very best, but entertaining for what it is.
I absolutely hated the last half of the 3rd book.

Writing is for a 13 year old but the story is good.
They get worse as each book progresses.

The easy writing allowed me to go through all 3 in a week or so, but didn't bother me much.
But it seemed like she rushed and destroyed the second half of the 3rd book. It almost felt like she had 25 ways she wanted the story to go, wrote out all 25 ways... And took a few sentences of each way and randomly through it into the book.

First book was good.
Second wasn't bad, and I thought bringing back former champions was a nice twist.
The third book was really bad.

They were such an easy and mindless read, I read them while studying for the bar exam back in 2011. They were a good distraction.
The first two I finished in about 4 days. The last book was so bad, it made me actually want to go back to studying for the bar again.

I'll parrot what everyone else has been saying. I agreed to read them with my wife back when the first movie was coming out. The first couple were entertaining enough and pretty enjoyable. The last book made me angry that I wasted my time with it. It was complete dogshit.

I messaged my wife immediately when I was done...
The guy made a special trident for Finnick. It sounded awesome and when he would throw it, he would have a bracelet that he can press and it comes back to him. Do you know how many times he used it? NONE. It sat on his fricking shoulder. And then he died randomly and quickly later on.

If you liked Hunger Games for the violence and dystopian social structure, try the Red Rising series.

I agree. Building tension from this love triangle starting in the first book, back and forth throughout the series, and in the end Gale’s superiors make the choice for her lol. I know Gale not being phased by the civilian deaths tripped her up, but she didn’t seem that enthusiastic about Peeta either at the end. He just kind of follows her around their post-war community until she gives in. Romantic

Agreed. I felt like Hunger Games was terrible once they left the game. She couldn't create a solid story or world outside of it. Id argue that Red Rising got better once they left their version of the games.

Never read the Hunger Games but I really liked Red Rising Book 1 - have read the first 3. The 2nd and 3rd are both very good books, particularly the 2nd, but I liked the 1st best because I felt like i really understood the characters, in the 2nd and moreso the 3rd, i feel like a lot of the action was seen through characters I didn't really understand the motivations of outside of Darrow.
This is probably mainly a matter of taste as my favorite books are long world building series. My friend who has read all 5 said that the 2nd trilogy gets more into that zone so excited to pick up those once the final one is out.

I read them a few years ago. First book was solid and very entertaining. Second book was enjoyable but nowhere near as good as the first.
The first half of the third book was really difficult to get through. And then it was like the author got tired of writing, closed all the non essential plot points and ended the story. Happily ever after?....

I wouldn't say I hated it, but it was a really weak way to end the trilogy. It was pretty disappointing though because I thought the first half of Mockingjay was really well done and set the stage for a great finish.

The premise got me through. The first book is good enough to get you hooked on the world and the characters so that youre willing to read all 3 to find out what happens.

It's a bit jarring going from 3 to 4 because the new trilogy introduces chapters with different POVs than just Darrow. Dark Age (book 5) may be my favorite of the series.

Ya, i enjoyed the first 3 but they probably aren't something I will pick up again. Just felt like the character development outside of Darrow and a couple others was pretty thin for my tastes.
