Suggestions for books that are just a good story

I just finished reading Miguel Street and realized I have a craving for books that are just stories.
Not thrillers, mysteries, fantasy, sci-fi, whodunnits, espionage etc.
Just stories about life.
Not sure if I am communicating this correctly, but if you have suggestions, TIA.

I’m hoping to find some good suggestions in the replies. A solid plot with w an interesting, effectivenarrative style and strong, well- developed characters is a treat, No need for laser beams or magic spells.

Living in Harmony by Sue Cato Gennings. Great story and interesting characters. It is about a few families who built their lives by hard work. A very good read.

John Grisham wrote some shorter books about sports related stories: Playing for Pizza, Calico Joe, Bleachers. They may fit your criteria. I enjoyed them for just being fun sports stories.
