Is it worth a read? I recently came into possession of all 3 volumes for free. I love reading history books and I’ve heard good things but they seem like a huge task especially since I haven’t been able to read as much since quarantine

Yep.

It’s an undertaking, but worth it.

I read the hard copy and keep the audiobook on audibles. If you have a commute or drive a fair amount for work, it’s great for throwing on in the car.

I don’t think you will get bogged down. I was sad to be through when I finished and felt it was a labor of love for Foote and an interesting and entertaining read.

Absolutely it is worth the read. Great stuff. It may be 3000 pages, but you will never have to read another history of the Civil War. All others pale in comparison.

I read Vol. 1 last year. “Labor of love” is how I would describe my reading of it.

I'm reading it now, and have been for some time. It is a dense, difficult read. 1.2 million words. For context, a little less than twice the length of the Bible. Is it worth it? Yes, Foote has done a great job with his magnum opus. But make no mistake, finishing the series will be a project. I've broken it up by reading numerous novels along the way. I do not recommend reading this narrative cover-to-cover without some kind of intervening breaks from the material.

How long have you been reading it?

I bought them to read and once I started I quickly decided I’ll honestly probably wait till I’m retired to read it (I’m 31). I want to fully appreciate it and it’s detail.

Since the summer of 2019. But realize that I read multiple books at one time, and that I also intentionally took breaks from it (some quite long). My best guess is that it would take a month per book, plus one for good measure, for someone to read the series uninterrupted.
