I stopped reading after 3 pages. Really surprised nobody had mentioned Joe Abercrombies The First Law series.
That series blew me away the same as the first time I read LOTR and ASoIaF. He is a brilliant writer. I havent read the prequels or stand alone books yet those. Thats my next read.

If you had read to page four you would have seen Abercrombie mentioned. Though your post did make me realize that I somehow inexplicably left him off my list of authors when he is one of my favorites.
And enjoy the follow up novels and the prequel short stories, they are all great. Red country is actually my favorite book by Abercrombie.

The series is great. I loved the standalone stories as well.

Has anyone read Ball Lightning by Cixin Liu? I was excited to read it because I loved Three Body Problem so much. But man, I just couldn't finish the book. I got about halfway through and gave up. It was so damn boring.

I read a few summaries and all and decided it didnt seem like my kind of book.

I'm heading to the bookstore today to pick out something new. I guess I'll go with First Law trilogy - been on my radar since they first came out, but never gotten around to them.

First Law is a good one.
Has one of the single best characters ever if you ask me.

Glokta or Ninefingers? Both are fantastic to me, but I'd assume you are talking about Sand.
Can't wait for the first book of the new trilogy this September, glad he's finished all three before releasing so we will get them yearly. That makes a nice change of pace from guys like Martin and Rothfuss.

First book is called A Little Hatred, it picks up around 20-30 years after the events of The Heroes/Red Country. Adua is in the midst of the industrial revolution of that world. Children of many of the characters from the other books will be the main characters in this trilogy.
Abercrombie's one sentence description of the new trilogy:
"Game of Thrones meets Les Miserables with less singing and more hangings".

He's been writing this one since he put out his Shattered Sea trilogy young adult series (YA in name only really). He's already finished all three and is just in the editing process for books 2 and 3, so the first is scheduled for release Sept 19th, with book 2 supposed to be released in Sept 2020 and book 3 in Sept 2021.

That’s pretty much the most Abercrombie quote ever.

Did you not think Glokta was a great character?
He had the best character arc in the series

I picked up book 1 of The Shadow Campaigns at the store and also bought the First Law Trilogy on Amazon (it was like $17 per book plus tax at the store).
I was looking at the Shadow Campaigns, and it seems to have 5 main books - but also has a couple side books in the same story / timeline. Anyone that has read it, is there a particular order you would recommend or should I just stick the main 5 to start out? Also that series is complete correct? the book he put out last year was the final one?
Probably will work my way through First Law before starting Shadow Campaigns.

Yeah, The Infernal Battalion (book 5) is the final one in the series. I never read any of the prequel short stories for the series, so can't comment on those.

Thanks, i'll probably stick to the main 5 books then.
First Law just came in today, very excited. I gotta go out of town for work so I should be able to get pretty far into it at the hotel the next couple of days.

Best scifi/fantasy books you might not have heard of? The Saga of Pliocene Exile by Julian May. First book is called A Many Colored Land. Check it out if you enjoy complex writing and a unique story.
