Nah, it's a different world setting entirely. I've read some say it's supposed to be post apocalypse Earth similar to Prince of Thorns with the old world tech in a medieval setting. And Abercrombie's map in those books apparently matches up with the Baltic sea and Sweden/Scandinavia.

Either way it's a different world for sure.

Half way through Trouble with Peace. He just couldn’t make it all the way through without throwing some gayness in could he?

Are you seriously trying to accuse Abercrombie of all people of being woke or something?

I mean, after nine books in that world it would be less realistic if he didn't have at least one gay character/relationship. The fact that the character inn question is the most hateable Character in that trilogy kinda add another wrinkle as well.

I wouldn’t go that far. It dosent ruin anything or make me think any less of him. Just seems par for the course for the time it was written (2020). Can’t say I didn’t see it coming. Seemed like there were subtle hints throughout the book

Copied from a Reddit post.

quote:

New details about the future of The First Law from Joe

Joe did a new interview where he mostly talked about process and how he writes. You can all check it out here: LINK

But we did get some snippets from Joe about what is next for series:

1. There will be a continuation of The First Law unless The Devils is super successful beyond all expectations.

2. He won't be advancing too much further with technology. He doesn't want personal firearms to ever feature in the story.

3. It won't follow up on what most of us expect it to. I think he's likely referring to Rikke's vision and Hildi/Calder's son here but who knows.

4. It will likely be three standalones. He isn't 100% on this but he does feel that makes sense. Joe does say about another trilogy after if he still alive at that point.

5. It will deal with magic returning to the world and he gave the historical reference point of Britain sending its prisoners to Australia as a part of the story.

Overall, there's a lot of stuff here we could ascertain ourselves but it's nice to hear it from the man himself. A lot of this does feel a long way away and he's still got the 2nd and 3rd Devils books to finish off so we are likely looking at 2030s for a return to the series, but it's good to know he's thinking about it and what he'll do next.

by the way, not sure if anyone else gets this vibe but my mental image of Bayaz is Varys from GoT...probably because they're both bald and low down scheming mofos

So you didn't read the end? That was legit the twist at the end that Glokta was the one pulling the strings and that someone finally outsmarted Bayaz. Not really sure how you could take that the other way

He for sure got the one up on him as far as that trilogy goes. I mean Bayaz isn't dead so I'm sure he'll pop back up in some format if he gets to more standalones but that would make the entire overall story/theme of the Age of Madness trilogy useless if Bayaz was considered the victor after it was over.

Finally just finished the series. I’ve got an unpopular opinion:

The Age of Madness trilogy was the worst part of the series. And by worst I mean it was a 7/10 whereas the first 3 were 9/10 and the standalones 10/10. So it’s still good, just not as good as the rest.

It just went a different direction than I thought it was going to go. I felt like the first 3 set up an otherworldly enemy being the biggest threat along with Bayaz and the eaters. Sort of like in Game of Thrones how it was war between nations but you knew the ultimate threat at the end would be the white walkers. I thought ultimately everyone would be together in a fight against a bigger evil. But instead we got a revolution against the crown. It wasn’t bad, I just didn’t care as much about the whole breakers/burners story line. The whole first half of A Little Hatred was a bit of a slog with them setting up the breakers/burners story line.

AOM did give us some great characters however which i think is where Abercrombie shines. Orso was great, as well as Vick, and Broad. He did a fantastic job of seemingly giving you a new hero to root for in Leo before slowly turning the reader against him and making him (my) most hated in the series. Savine was well done, I couldn’t decide if I like her or not by the end which i think was intentional. Rikke was ok, and of course 2 of the GOATs Glokta and Shivers shine. The final twist with Glokta prevailing over Bayaz was great and I thought was a nice wrap to the series

Now for my most frustrating complaint. I will begin by saying that I get it. AOM moved away from some big characters in order to let the new generation shine, I get it. BUT NO BLOODY NINE AT ALL?! CMON JOE I kept waiting for him to make a grand entrance and it never came. I like to think he rode off into the sunset and finally found peace.
I also thought we’d eventually see Ferro again but nothing.

10 books in just under a year and it was a hell of a ride. Now one of my favorite series of all time. Thanks for the rec book board

I'd agree with this sentiment across the board really, though I'd put age of madness more in the 7.5-8 range. Still good, but Rikke and Shivers was the only engrossing part for me, Abercrombie's french revolution storyline wasn't all that interesting. Though the Glokta reveal and the eaters revenge was pretty cool.

Probably not that unpopular of an opinion. I'd probably have them at an 8/10, standalones 9.5/10 and OG trilogy 10/10. AoM is a great trilogy, but it was going to be hard to match what came before it. I think it was a very respectable follow up. But I also am probably a little bigger fan of Abercrombie than most. That is honestly my favorite fantasy series outside of Lordof the Rings, I enjoyed them that much.

I didn't expect to see Logan (I liked how his story ended in RC) but I thought Ferro might pop up since she hadn't shown up at all since the first three. But I image she is still out there getting vengeance on someone.

Glad you enjoyed it. Still have only read the standalones once so looking forward to doing a re-read of those soon. Wish Abercrombie got a little more notoriety, he deserves it.

In my mind, he is Gandalf who took up the One Ring and became the new Dark Lord.

He's bald with a shorter grey beard. I've kind of always pictured him like a short version of Jeff Bridges in Iron Man.

Logan has always looked like Mickey Rourke/Marv in Sin City in my head. Logan is younger but that's always been a good fit to me.

I went way off base with how I pictured Bayaz relative to how he’s described. I pictured him as Jason Mamoa

For the bloody nine I don’t see how anybody who has seen Vikings dosent picture him as Ragnar Lothbrook. Matter of fact I pictured all the Northman to look like characters from Vikings.
