Red Rising series (Spoilers)

I have seen this series recommend on this board several times, so thank you to all those who posted about it.
Started Red Rising two weeks ago on a flight from Europe and finished Morning Star on Friday. What a bloodydamn wild ride. The series seemed a combo of two of my favorite books: Ender's Game and Lord of the Flies, with a little Altered Carbon.
I tried my best to avoid spoilers, so it was actually a surprise when I learned there is a fourth book and plans for a second trilogy. For the readers of Iron Gold, how does it stand up against the OT? And are you excited for the fifth book?

I liked Iron Gold a lot. It is very different than the original trilogy because it follows around 4 characters instead of just Darrow. I am not sure if I liked it better or worse having 4 narrators instead of 1.
I am definitely ready for the 5th book, and the fact that they are churned out so quickly is a nice change of pace from ASOIAF and KKC.

I made it about half way through book 1 and bailed. I'm a big fan of Ender's Game, but I had trouble visualizing the story.
Perhaps I need to pick it up again.

I thought it was mediocre, but I seem to be in the minority on that around here. It was poorly written and shallow

I really liked Iron Gold as well, but being that I listen to the audiobooks I preferred the one narrator in the original trilogy because Tim Gerard Reynolds is the GOAT.
Having a couple of characters come up in multiple POVs got confusing because all of the accents and voices were so different.
Also looks like we gave a couple bloody damn pricklicks in this thread.

I enjoyed the books a great deal. I found them very entertaining and the action was well written and the surprises and schemes were well done. It was also very well paced (though a few moments were not)
I don't think you would call it poorly written - but, the actual writing is, in and of itself, shallow. The story itself is not shallow though.
I was not sure if the writing was shallow because the main narrator himself would be fairly limited in how he views the world, or if it was a limitation of the writer. Or maybe not even a limitation - a purposeful choice to highlight the pacing and entertainment value of the books.

For a plot driven, genre piece, the characters were pretty well realized and had clear motivations that got mucked up and bloodied as the story progressed, which is what you want. You want the character to struggle with his or her motivation. It's not a series that is designed to have multiple layers of analysis performed on it. It's a straightforward action SciFi book that has a neat enough history to ground it in something interesting and an exciting enough plot to keep the pages turning.
It's very good for what it is, which is basically pure entertainment.

i read the first 2. I rented the 3rd in the trilogy from the library on 3 different occasions. I don't know that I made it thru 100 pages of the 3rd book on any of the 3 tries i gave it. I'm moving on. Too many books out their to struggle thru anything.

I just finished IG. It was definitely a different read with the 4 characters. I wouldn’t be disappointed if only Lysander and Darrow were the focus of Dark Age. The return of the Reaper and Lysander’s alliance with The Rim is a great starting point for the next book.
Side note: not sure if it’s a common opinion, but Cassius isn’t dead. Diomedes smuggled him out under the guise that his body was stolen. Also, any guesses on the identity of the syndicate queen?

Agreed. If you don't see someone die "on screen" then they're not dead.

Sephi? Though that may be too obvious a choice.

I thought the same as well. There just aren't a lot of options. Maybe Harmony, but I think she is the leader of the Red Hand.
Also have to point out how much I like Kavax, Sophocles, and the jelly beans.
