quote:

A beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct. This every sister of the Bene Gesserit knows. To begin your study of the life of Muad'Dib, then, take care that you first place him in his time: born in the 57th year of the Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV. And take the most special care that you locate Muad'Dib in his place: the planet Arrakis. Do not be deceived by the fact that he was born on Caladan and lived his first fifteen years there. Arrakis, the planet known as Dune, is forever his place.

-from "Manual of Muad'Dib" by the Princess Irulan

Very excited. I begin chapter 1 today. Would anyone be interested in a sort of Dune noob discussion chapter by chapter?

I just finished a read through of the original (not his son's abominations) series. I'll be interested in reading your thoughts on Dune.

I've read book 1 - thoughts on the others?

I heard the next two weren't as good and that although the 4th and 5th ones were good, he died before he could wrap up the storylines he had developed

Did the first one interest you enough to want to know more? Books 2 and 3 are good. Book 2 deals with Muad'dib running a galactic empire, an how he is stuck in a prescient trap of his own visions.

Book 3 deals with his children and how they must now use their own prescience to save mankind from themselves.

Book 4 takes place hundreds of years after book 3.

The rest take place millennia after book one.

They are all good. But its a shame that Frank couldn't finish the series.

If you loved the first one, you'll enjoy the rest. The next two are in the same vein as the first book. The next one really get out there, on a galactic scale. Well worth the time to read them.

I just started audiobook. I've started it a few times and was doing house projects and zoning out.

Started over. I may be able to contribute here.

This has been in my audible queue for ages. Wouldn't mind giving it a start now.

I generally listen for about 2 hours a day (dog walking in the morning and evening).

How do we go about discussing this?

I’m reading it now. I’m just thinking at the end of each chapter I’ll post my thoughts and predictions and we can discuss as we go?

I’ll put a link and updates in the OP to each new chapter post.

Reading will take me longer than the audiobook guys but I’m shooting for a chapter or two a week? Not sure how long the chapters are, so I’ll adjust as we go.

Go through all of Frank's stuff.

Then forget the ones where Brian let Kevin in on the fanfiction stuff.

I just read to the first two I guess chapters.

I didn’t realize it doesn’t have real chapters but more non-numbered sections divided by quotes which will make this more challenging. I’ll post where I’m at and the quote page tonight and we’ll see how this goes.

Pretty interesting premise so far. Not much to discuss yet. But It’s set up well. I’m interested to see where they go with the how do you tell if someone is human stuff and if we get more back story with the old woman.

I had no idea this is where the spice melange and internal monologue jokes in South Park this season came from.

i am definitely hooked. Excited to see where this goes.

I’m trying to keep this thread spoiler free for first time readers, but I’ll post when we’re done the book so we can have a big discussion with everyone.

The novel breaks down in three sections, book 1, 2, and 3, so each section make a good stopping point
