Lies is damn near perfect though.

Yeah, I'd say it's one of the top couple books I read in the past 15 years.

Name of the Wind would probably be in the top 25 I've read despite the mediocre plot and average characters simply due to how well it is written, too bad the second was such a festering pile of author wish fulfillment porn and terrible writing that I really don't recommend the series to anyone.

I really don’t care if a plot is mediocre if it’s told in an interesting way. I think Name of The Wind is the poster child of that. Interestingly enough I enjoyed the hell out of book 2 when I first read it, the faerie porn got pretty silly, but overall I enjoyed the book. But I went back to try to reread it and it felt like a steaming pile of shite was dumped into my hands.

I read Name of the wind in one day and read wise mans fear the next day so I think I was still carrying the buzz of Wind the first time around. That’s the only explanation I have for enjoying the second book on the first read.

It definitely is the poster child of that. I'm just a huge plot and characters guy, which keeps it from elite status for me.

You aren't alone, it actually has a higher review average on Goodreads than the name of the wind. As someone who read each book around the time they came out, the positive reviews of wise man's fear baffled me. There are the makings of a decent book there, but he basically glosses over the interesting parts of the story in an effort to be cute, and then spends most his time on crap. A big steaming pile pretty much sums it up.

Another character issues...he spends an inordinate amount of time dwelling on Denna’s character and the weird domestic violence angle of her character trying to tell the reader “nothing is wrong here.”

Apparently Devi was a new character that did not exist in prior versions and she’s probably the best female in the story while most others are underwritten tropes.

It's been so long since I've read these books that I don't even recall who Devi is. Ha.

I remember the highlights, I suppose.

I have the kind of brain that easily remembers pointless pop culture details and novel bits. I haven’t read either book since WMF was first released.

Red Seas Under Red Skies was definitely a huge drop after Lies. The book didn’t really know what it wanted to be. A heist or a pirate book??? Pick one.

That said I thought Republic of Thieves got the story back on track and the ending left me hungry for the next book.

Man i was the exact opposite. I absolutely LOVED Red Seas - I enjoyed it even more than Lies of Locke, but i don't think it is a better book (and i may have been also having some of that afterglow love that people talked about above, pretty sure I read all three in about a week).

I really did not enjoy Republic of Thieves. It left me hungry because i wasn't satisfied with anything that really happened in the book, felt really unnecessary to me.

The second book was so bad I wouldn't read DOS even if this pussy finished it. The Ketan and Lethani shite was painful to read and get through. Just awful.

Name of the wind was one of the best fantasy openers I’ve ever read. The second book dropped off HARD though.

Devi is the girl loan shark who got kicked out of the university and needs Kvothe's blood to loan him money.

If he ever finishes book 3 I'll just have to read them both because I've forgotten practically everything.

If Trump wins reelection, I seriously think Rothfuss is going to have a coronary.

Exactly this. Loved the first one. But have stopped on the second one multiple times.

Long, drawn out, and frankly boring af. Truly magical.
