I have wanted to get started on Michener novels, and would like recs on where to begin.

Any that are outstanding? Any that are not great?

TIA

I enjoyed Texas. Caribbean was interesting and I learned a few things, but I thought Texas was better.

I've read Space and Tales of the South Pacific. I enjoyed them both.

I have read a bunch of them throughout the years. The Source is very good. I read Alaska before going on an Alaskan cruise. It was a great book and really added to the cruise experience. Centennial was interesting. Mexico and Caribbean were good.

I have only read The Bridges At Toko-Ri. It was great. Great movie too.

Absolutely Hawaii. His multi-generational approach was still reasonably fresh and the theme of Western Values helping/harming natives still resonates. He also creates a complex protagonist in Reverend Hale.

Centennial is great.

The Source is great for how it is structured.

So far I have:

Texas
Space
Caribbean
Tales of the Pacific
Centennial
Hawaii
The Source
Alaska
The Bridges at Toko-Ri
Mexico

So it seems I can't go wrong.

Appreciate the recommendations.

I read most of them as or soon after they were published. (Decades ago.)
These are the memories I have:

Chesapeake: especially the part about boat building and then advancing in the craft.

Hawaii: exotically wonderful

Colorado: the prehistory at the beginning was vivid (and I knew the rocks from field camp)

Caravans: I knew nothing about that part of the world and it was one vivid description after another.

That part sold me on reading the rest of the book...and that is titled Centennial. ;)
