I didn't quite understand what was going on as I just finished the first book. I thought I would figure out what was going on with the pilgrimage but I never did. Am I just not getting it or do I need to push on with the next 3?

Th general consensus by everyone that reads it is: "WTF did I just read?"

What part didn’t you understand? I thought it was pretty straight forward. Each pilgrim told their tale and how they tied into the Shrike. Book ends with the buildup of them confronting the Shrike.

Only confusing part could be Brawne’s story when she is talking about the Core.

They never achieved anything other than "pilgrimaging" so I was left wondering WTF just happened. It's like a book that just cut out half way through. I've pushed on to book #2 though.

Like the others have said, keep reading. I just finished the series not long ago. There was still a few things I was not sure about at the end, but most of the loose ends get tied up.

Even if its a series, the first book should be able to stand on its own. I'm not ready for a 3-5 book commitment before i know what the hell is going on.

Yeah, I bought the first book but not book 2. I expected book 1 to be the pilgrimage. Get ready you don't get a conclusion of the pilgrimage until the end of book 2.

They basically split the story into 2 books.

It's a good read but that would have been nice to know going into it.

The first book is basically an introduction to this universe. The second book has a more straight forward narrative, and the large themes are more clearly laid out.

Also, the rest of the series is awesome!

Don't ever pick up Gardens of the Moon then.

Erikson takes in media res and clubs you over the head with it.

Just finished Kassad’s story. Really liked it. Probably my favorite so far.
