About two months ago, my middle son was talking to me about Harry Potter which they read in 3rd grade this year. At that point, I decided to re-read the entire series because I hadn’t read the books since they were released. Last one being before I had children at least 13 years ago.

I just completed my re-read. Wow, what a difference in perspective now that I have had kids. I so thoroughly enjoyed it, watching the movie that corresponds with each book after completing the book, which I didn’t get to do the first go round. It truly reads differently.

I would encourage any Harry Potter fan to do the same. I have only one kid so far that is interested in the books, though I didn’t read the first until I was in my early 20s. I hope that I can convince my oldest and youngest to give them a try.

Agreed.

Like "Why the hell are they letting these kids walk around a dangerous old castle with so much freedom!?!?"

When I was first dating my now wife, she was into the Harry Potter books. She knew I loved to read, so she wanted me to try them.

I thought to myself "man, I don't really feel like reading a kid's book. But I'm trying to impress this girl, so I'll give the first one a try. And if I don't like it, I'm sure she'll appreciate that I tried."

I read the first book in a day.

I asked for the second one.

Read that in two days.

Ask for the third one.

Read it in less than a week.

I asked her for the 4th one.

"Oh, that one isn't out yet."

"frick!"

My favorite is Half Blood Prince followed closely by Order of the Phoenix and Deathly Hallows. The second to last chapter in Hallows is just so good. The culmination of everything! I think I read it 3 times last night. The first one so quickly because I wanted to see what happened, even though I already knew. The second time to make sure I got it all and the third to let it really sink in.

Now I’m sad it over.

Yeah, I remember being in a funk for a few days after finishing the last book 10 years ago.

Harry Potter was a fantastic story to grow up with, especially given how quickly JKR wrote them. I was 11 when the first one came out and 19 when the last one came out, so I basically aged at the same rate of Harry and the books become more mature as it ages alongside Harry. It’s a book that is not remotely condescending to children and I think will last a long time given it was from the start written as a period piece.

I love the books and movies. Great read. My fave is half blood prince. Can’t wait till my youngest is at the age to read them.

The first two books are pretty close, although some key variances as can always be expected with book to film.

But, from Prisoner of Azkaban on, it was eye-opening in the differences.

Azkaban, Half Blood Prince, and Order of the Phoenix were my favorite movies. I read the books after the movies and am glad I did. I never would have enjoyed the movie if it was the other way around. The depth, stories, other characters, and background (especially with James Potter, Sirius, Lupin and Worm tail growing up) were awesome parts of the books.

When my daughter was young I read every one of them aloud to her before bedtime. I’m pretty sure I mucked up a lot of the words at the time.
