Broke on the Natchez Democrat a little while ago. The cancer finally got him.

One of my favorite authors. Hated that he let his politics leach into his writing big time at the end and he became so obnoxious and over-the-top with preaching his views, but over all one heck of a body of work.
Penn Cage is probably at top 5 literary character for me, save for Southern Man. I just really feel like that while he was writing it Iles was just in a bad place physically and emotionally with everything going on in his personal life and it showed.

His early stuff is fantastic. I happened upon his books in a Natchez bookstore - I think he has done a signing there earlier that day and ther was a display of his then few books.
Stopped reading anything new a decade or maybe 15 years or more ago. Just not enjoyable to read anymore.
Sorry to hear he passed.

Work has had me on the road a lot this spring and summer so I started listening to his audiobooks to help pass the time driving and in the hotel. Just finished Sleep No More. Had never read it before, kind of weird but damn it was enjoyable.

That he was. Sucks he let politics destroy his creative ability. His early works were fantastic. RIP Greg.

RIP. Longwinded dude for sure. Thick thick books. I enjoyed them all.

The first few boos I read of his were fantastic.
When it got to the Penn Cage trilogy he did it was awful.

I've read every one of his books up until Cemtery Road. The politics were so bad in that especially with the whole "my dad had the goods on Trump" part. I don't know how any books he had past that, but it was my last one. There was a time I would have said he was my favorite author too

Is he the one that lived in that riverboat style house?

Sounds a lot like Christopher Moore. Discovered him when Bloodsucking Fiends came out in 95, read all his stuff, then he just totally went off the rails after the 2004 elections , basically told anyone that “voted wrong” that he didn't want them as fans. Welp. We obliged him. Haven’t read anything of his since.

He restored Edelweiss. My wife and I stayed there a couple of times. Really cool house.
He showed me the first check he got for one of his books.
