George RR Martin gives the finger to fans on The Winds of Winter

In response to a fan who asked about the timeline for Fire and Blood—a new spinoff series exploring the history of House Targaryen—GRRM revealed that it would be released as two separate volumes. However, this explanation included a detail that may have ASOIAF fans pulling their hair out.
quote:
“F&B will be in two volumes. Vol 1 before [The Winds of Winter], vol 2 after,” he replied in the comments of his LiveJournal blog.

But don't worry. Volume two is almost complete. It's just that it was too long and he had to decide how to split it up. Either by members of the Targaryen family, or by timeline. He decided to do it by members of the family, but because of that volume two is pretty much complete and should be out shortly after...

I've been on this train since the 90's. I have two very naive beliefs:
1. He's going to wrap it up with Winds.
2. He's timing the final book's release to coincide with the end of the HBO series to ride the hype train to get book sales.
Here's why I stupidly think that:
HBO made him famous, he's not going to bite the hand that feeds him. If he releases Winds and it's in a totally different direction from the show, then the show is no longer canon. He doesn't want that. He's friends with the writers and actors now. He's not going to kill off Arya and take away her job! He's also not going to make nearly enough money with a "final" book 10 years from now. The hype train will have left the building. He's going to strike while the iron's hot, if he's smart.

Problem is tubby has more than enough to eat now, think he's well past the point of giving a shite about sales. He is either an old bitter bastard that is pissed he didn't get monster success til near the end of his life and is looking to punish his fans, is an old bored bastard that doesn't give enough of shite to finish, or is a secret magnanimous genius bastard and will release both books at the same time.

But what a supple delicious hand it is. He could write pages of the juiciness, the plumpness of that very ripe hand. Pages and pages on the color, tint, and flavor profile of that hand. And then in one fell swoop. He'll use it to twist a nipple.

ASOIaF is GRRM's life's work. It's his magnum opus. If he forsakes that to eat sausages and potatoes while taking pictures with various B list actresses on the talk show circuit than that's his bad.

On another note, I follow George’s blog pretty regularly and he absolutely will respond to your questions on there. He has responded to me twice, once when I asked how to get girls to like you (he replied that I have come to the wrong place for that advice), and the other inquiring about outdoor activities in New Mexico.

You asked George R. R. Martin about outdoor activities and how to get girls? Did you ever consider asking him a question on a subject he might possibly know something about?

That was the whole joke....of course he doesn’t know about girls and outdoor activities....

I’m just not sure about this. He’s 70. And he’s never been fast. I saw a panel thing he did with Stephen king, king talked about writing everyday etc, because that’s his job. Martin was flabbergasted. He doesn’t write a lot anymore and I got the impression when he did he didn’t like it. I’m not hopeful.

Ah. My bad, then. You presented it so matter-of-factly that I missed the joke.

Well...what was his answer on the outdoors?

I don't know. His answer should have been something about writing a popular book series, selling said series to HBO to make a hit show, milking said series for everything it's worth, and leaving them all clamoring for more as a way to get girls. You know he's been swimming in semi-hot to hot geek-girl poon for nigh a decade now.

That is literally the founding principle of good writing: write as much as possible, as often as possible, proofread and edit, admit it's mostly shite, keep the good parts, write more.

He referred me to another author friend of his who was more of an avid outdoorsman/fisherman. Let me go see who it was.
