Fun story, but yeah you’ve got to be at least late 20s with some knowledge of prior times to enjoy it.

Eh, I'm 31 and have never played any of the video games he talks about and was pretty clueless about a lot of the references but still enjoyed it.

Was considering reading it until I heard it was horribly written.

Still might give it a try

My 4th grader started this book on Thursday and just finished it, loving every page of it.

He doesn’t understand any of the references to the 80’s but still couldn’t put it down.

23 AR points for those interested.

Finished Ready Player One
I liked the book, but like the Arthur's other book The Armada better. It was still a geeky story, but had better character development.

You're kidding right??

I LOVED RP1. I just read for a third time in prep for the movie release.

As much as I love RP1, and wanted Armada to be just as good, it's not close. You can tell his publisher rushed him to crank out another book while he was the hot thing. So he took all his notes and 80's pop culture references that he didn't use in RP1 and hastily wrote a story around those references.

RP1's references worked because of the unique premise of the story, Halliday's love of the 80's and the nature of the contest.

Armada had none of that.

The shoehorned 80s references every third sentence was very distracting for me. I thought the book was massively overhyped.

Reads like a children's book.

At least half of the sentences could have been taken out and the book loses nothing.

Author has zero ability to describe a scene in any interesting and fresh way.

That said...it was kind of enjoyable.
