Yeah, if you don't like it after the first book you aren't going to like it I'd imagine. I'd at least give it the full book though.

I’m trying to like it but finding it hard to get into the series. 130 pages in the first book.

I recently started the audiobook after reading the entire (as of now published) series, and book 1 is… fine. It’s having to carry a ton of “systems building” weight, which means the “world building” is mostly pushed back. I would say the series really starts finding its footing in book 2 as the world building gets more meta.

With that said, what are you not enjoying? If you don’t love the characters, give it a minute. They are coming around. If you don't enjoy the litRPG conceit, then that obviously isn’t going anywhere.

For god's sake, please listen to the audiobook version.

Granted I am not a huge reader, but I would have likely not made it very far if I was just reading the books.

Does he ever stop making Carl sound like he has a few marbles in his mouth? It’s the one voice I really don’t care for, which is real fricking unfortunate

It changes a few times. At first it Hayes thought it was too Patric Wharburton hence his cameo later on. I think they also switched up equipment at some point and the voice changed a bit

Carl I actively don’t like, and Imani is just… different than what I’d like? Oh, Mordecai is kind of a lot as well :lol

I’ve read the books; I was purely commenting on the voices I’ve heard thus far

He definitely is. Based on her physical description, I just had Imani a bit more waifish-sounding in my head, and that’s not how he did it. Unlike Carl, I don’t dislike the delivery; it just felt unexpected and discordant to my ear.

I am curious about the challenge switching from so many different voices while keeping pace

I imagine he records each character's lines at one time and then it is pieced together in editing.

I just can't see someone switching between that many voices for 18 hours.

No, he does cold reads live on YouTube and he very much just reads and switches at will

Soundbooth Theater Live on YouTube

He does a lot of the work in session so he will often stop, re-record, or skip lines/characters if he's not getting the voice right

It's crazy

I'm not sure how far into it Donut eats the biscuit but the story doesn't take off until she comes into her own.

I'm happy it's someone like Seth McFarlane who is good at both nerd shite and telling whatever joke he wants

It's so hard to describe DCC to a newbie without it sounding lame and stupid "Just trust me, it works" only goes so far. A cross between Hitchhiker's Guide and Family Guy is the best I've come up with.

Matt Dinniman is like if Terry Prachett and Phillip K Dick (or Heinlein) had a kid and that kid had a very traumatic event (ala Dexter) that fricked his head up hard, but he channelled it into books
