Dark Tower question

I just finished the 1st book and while enjoyable, does it get better? Admittedly, the only Stephen King book I have read is Dreamcatcher.
I was under the impression this was a series that is a must read and can't put down but I found myself wondering when the grand adventure would start. I got the answer at the end, but idk, I'm afraid it may have just fallen short of my expectations.

I actually asked the same question a few years back, but it was in an email to someone that reads everything King. I was about 150 pages into the second book and was just not into it. I asked if there was a hill to get over and it starts to wow you. She said no, if I didn't like it by now, I should probably stop.

Well that makes me feel a little better, I guess. I'll try the Second one and see how far I get.
Maybe Wheel of Time might work out better for me?

The first book of DT is solid but isn't going to blow you away. The second and third books are generally considered by far to be the best books in the series though, so if you get midway through book 2 and don't like it I'd just drop the series at that point.
Also, not really sure I'd label it must read after King rushed the last three books and tanked the ending (after the fourth book it was one of my favorite books series of all time). Dark tower has many similarities to the Game of Thrones TV show, it starts amazing, but the last few seasons, while having some really good scenes/episodes here or there, are mostly crap.

I think the second and third books are the best thing he’s ever written, especially Drawing of the Three.

It's weird you decided to read a long series after Dreamcatcher? Did you like that one? I would have gone with a classic for a second book. Something like Salem's Lot or a collection of short stories.

I read dreamcatcher in 8th grade and really enjoyed it. That was nearly 20 years ago.
I chose dark tower because I was looking for a longer series to pick up and wheel of time seemed daunting.

Agreed, those two along with the Night Shift short story anthology are my favorites by him. And Drawing of the Three is my overall favorite as well.

I'll agree with all of this, and add that King does something with the plot in the last few books that is highly narcistic and unforgivable. A lot of people hate the ending of the last book, but I do like it. But it's not worth wading through all the crap of the last few books to get there. So maybe read the first 3-4 books, then the very last of the last book?

Book IV, Wizard and Glass, is worth reading the first 3 books for.
He makes some odd choices after book 4 that completely pulled me out of the story. And in typical King fashion, he completely shits the bed when trying end the series (and in the process openly criticizes the reader for expecting a satisfactory ending). But the journey was enjoyable enough.
Also, if you decide to finish the series, make sure to pick up Wind Through the Keyhole, which was a great book that doesn't really expand the Dark Tower universe, but is a delightful stand alone.

This in a nutshell, between that and using a character in fifth book to bore the crap out of us writing about his alcoholism those last three books were garbage. I know many people liked the ultimate ending on the 7th book, but I thought it was a huge copout for a series I had been reading for 20 years and hated it.

As Barney said Wind through the keyhole is really good too, and worth reading I think. It was all the more disappointing to see that he was capable of writing a very good dark tower book after he shite the bed on the ending originally.

Wizard and Glass is incredible

Overall I liked the series but will never reread it. The first four books are captivating but then it goes off the rails a bit. But I did like the ending.

Agreed! His arc was a chore and a bore

Agree with the others. Second is by far the best. About halfway through the third it starts a long, slow, painful downward slide.

Agree with everyone, I overall loved the series but thought it did go downhill towards the end. The side stories are great.

I've read the series about 3 times, but I've read just Wizard and Glass about 6 on it's own. It really is a fantastic book, and gives insight of how he became such a focused hardass.

Picked up Salems Lot at a garage sale for my daughter and decided to re-read it yesterday. Started at 6pm and finished about 1am. Now re-reading Skeleton Crew...
