I think AFFC is the book that would benefit the most from a reread by a long shot. So many great things you can figure out from it.

Just started the re-read on AFFC. Trying hard to pay attention there was something that caught my eye today but I forgot to highlight it.
Oh...and I've talked my bf into watching the whole series from the start since he likes Tolkein. I'll let y'all know if he has any good reactions.

Very interesting catch. Nice.
I wonder what GRRM intends if Stannis did write the letter. That subplot seems to have just died right along with Jon*.
I guess the wildling/NW host could still head for Winterfell, even if Jon doesn't lead them. But the Pink Letter just doesn't seem like something Stannis' character would do. He would order Jon to come down.
If the letter is a lie, it seems more likely to have come from Bolton or Mel. But the link between the too books is pretty awesome.
*Jon doesn't stay dead FYI

I noticed something Melisandre said in Dance when talking about using Rattleshirt's armor to put a glamour on Mance. She goes on to mention other items that would work and one of them is a bag of finger bones.
Anybody have any ideas on when she could have used a glamour to make someone look like Davos?

Davos loses his in clash. At that point the only real moment alone he has with her is when he is smuggling her into Storm's End. Not sure who she could have made look like Davos though.

I noticed that also. And I immediately thought that there must me something going on with Davos.
However, Davos lost his finger bones in Blackwater Bay. I just can't quite figure out how Mel could have recovered them (unless she pulled some sort of switcheroo).
We know what real Davos is doing since we have a Davos POV. And I don't think she has his finger bones, so there is not a fake one running around.
So I think "finger bones" is meant to distract us. Mel also mentions that she could use a dead man's boots or a hank of hair.
Crackpipe lit: Fake Jon will make an appearance early in TWOW. But to what end? What would we love for Fake Jon to do? Mel is obessed with AA, so maby she uses Fake Jon to creat a distraction while she "reborns" Jon Warg. The NW could use a good civil war to clear out the anti-Jon faction.

Almost off the first page, bump.
Actually, I think there is no anti-Jon faction if this dude wakes up from the dead.

If we've learned anything from humanity it's that people have a significant fear of the unknown. He'll still have detractors and given what they've seen happen to others who have died and returned as wights it could be a little sketchy for him.

I would be willing to bet that a good portion of the NW would be calling him the Night's King returned. The Queen's men will probably think he is The Great Other. Either way, I don't think everyone will be lining up to welcome him back to life.

FUUUUUUUUUUU. KIIIIIIIING. AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
I actually predicted this earlier in the thread. This is my crackpot idea for the Jon story arc.
Belle loved it. She can't wait for Jon to hook up with Princess Other. (i bet it's cold...)

If we reread AFFC I want to do it chronologically with ADwD.
So I think we've established that we want to do a reread. So do we want to reread from the beginning? Do we want to do AFFC/ADwD? I think we're all in for the next Dunk and Egg that is supposed to be published this year (so we're told, no date yet though) so that's a given.
Or do we do start with ASoS since that's what's coming up next season on the show?
Thoughts?

Anything but Dany.

In. I just finished them that way. Best way to read them.
I would vote that we start with Game of Thrones.
Martin has said that he pretty well know the story of each character from the beginning. There are a lot of things in that first book that could be important, just not so obvious.

This gets my vote. Then again, I'm not one of the main participants of this thread so I will defer to others.

We're talking about doing a group re-read. Right now we're trying to decide if we want to start with Game of Thrones, start with a AFFC/ADwD chronological deal, or what.
It looks like three of us (myself, jrod, GIMP) are for Game of Thrones on and Carson mentioned AFFC (BBMcGee is currently rereading AFFC as well).
As far as other discussion we talked about the tapestries that Littlefinger requested from Ceresi. Some of us think there's something ON the tapestries. Some of us think something (like Blackfyre) is wrapped IN the tapestries. But there's something up with the tapestries.
There's some talk that Mel could've pulled a Rattleshirt/Mance with Davos (and how).
Some more Jon lineage speculation (he could be a Baratheon and Bran could be AA warged into a dragon).
Lots of talk about the valyrian swords of Westeros. Where some may be. Who may have them. Look for jrod's breakdown a couple pages back.

No way Littlefinger is foolish enough to sneak the Targaryen family sword out under Cersei's nose with a tapestry being its only concealment... Just not his style.
I could see something being ON the tapestries though.

That fingerbone comment has made me stumble quite a few times however I'm starting to believe it was just GRRM fricking with us. With people just like us who overanalyze every little detail.
It was his "I am the Walrus"

Speaking of this I noticed this today.
In the Ned chapter where he goes to the brothel with Littlefinger to find one of Robert's bastards GRRM puts this in there:
quote:
She [one of Robert's whores] had smiled then, a smile so tremulous and sweet that it cut the heart out of him. Riding through the rainy night, Ned saw Jon Snow’s face in front of him, so like a younger version of his own. If the gods frowned so on bastards, he thought dully, why did they fill men with such lusts? “Lord Baelish, what do you know of Robert’s bastards?”
It seems interesting that he would see Jon's face when thinking about that. If R+L=J was true then Jon wouldn't really be a bastard, assuming there was a marriage at some point which most people seem to believe happened.
So could that mean that Jon really is Ned's bastard?
Of course there is something contradicting that as well. In Arya's introductory POV this is noted
quote:
“A shade more fun than needlework,” Arya gave back at him. Jon grinned, reached over, and messed up her hair. Arya flushed. They had always been close. Jon had their father’s face, as she did. They were the only ones.
and then in the Arya POV when Ned discovers she has needle Ned says:
quote:
“Ah, Arya. You have a wildness in you, child. ‘The wolf blood,’ my father used to call it. Lyanna had a touch of it, and my brother Brandon more than a touch. It brought them both to an early grave.” Arya heard sadness in his voice; he did not often speak of his father, or of the brother and sister who had died before she was born. “Lyanna might have carried a sword, if my lord father had allowed it. You remind me of her sometimes. You even look like her.”
I, personally, subscribe to Jon being Lyanna's legitimate son through Rhaegar, and I think the deliberate description of Arya and Jon looking alike, while Arya is also said to look like Lyanna, is evidence for it. That first Ned thought about bastards, and seeing Jon's face, makes me wonder.
