They might have been. Targaryens practiced polygamy in the past and Bran might be able to see their wedding/marriage take place under the weirwood at the Tower of Joy.

Jon's place or station in society is a bastard whether it's true or not. It doesn't mean he is actually one.

Aegon the Conqueror married both of his sisters.

Lyanna and Rhaegar were not marry and that would make Jon a bastard.
There is a theory that they did end up getting married and that is one of the secrets Ned promised Lyanna he would keep. If they did get married then most likely Lyanna wouldn't wanted to do it in front of a heart tree, which is how Bran will be able to see it and, as the theory goes, out Jon as a Targ.
In one of Ned's POVs it specifically says "promises" and not the singular "promise"
quote:
He thought of the promises he’d made Lyanna as she lay dying, and the price he’d paid to keep them.
BTW, when searching my ebook for that phrase it is amazing how many times Ned remembers Lyanna saying "Promise me, Ned."

The promises & lie about Jon's parentage haunted Ned throughout his POVs.

I'm only on my first reread of the series so it surprised me when I just saw how much he reminds himself of it.

I dont buy LS + RT = JS for a number of reasons. First off, the mad King burned Ned Stark's Father and brother alive for sport in the most dishonorable fashion. Ned's highest value is honor. No way he supports and hides a Targarean heir. No way. He is not capable of keeping that secret.

Another problem is why would Ned dishonor himself just to let John grow up and go to the wall. If he was hiding JS believing he was a special heir, it just does not make sense to let Jon take the black. Its clear Ned respected RT. If he knew the lineage and hid him all those years, letting JS take the black makes all that time and hiding a complete waste.

And finally, John Snow has no Targarean features. I know folks will claim Dunk n Egg and features dont exactly matter. But the most powerful Targarean ever born is going to have Targarean features. He looks like a bloody Barathean. Like Gendry.

Are you serious? Jon is his nephew, and the last living reminder of his sister. The Targaryens had nothing to do with Ned protecting Jon.
Also, if you read closely and match some things up, Jon may not look like Rhaegar, but he has his same demeanor and personality. He looks like Arya who looks like Lyanna. He's got a Stark face.

Ned led the rebellion against the Targs. No way he can sit on that secret. He could not avoid telling Cersei he was going to rat her out. The secret is that Jon is a Baratheon and she wanted to keep him away from Cersei.

It also explains why the sword of the morning and company was at the Tower of Joy. They were there to kill the kid. Not to protect the Targ heir. Why would Illyrio and folks not have tried to step in and protect Jon. No way Jon is a Targ.

At the time that Jon was born Cersei wasn't anywhere in the picture for Robert.
There are absolutely no ties that I can find that matches Jon's looks to a Baratheon.
He does however match the description of Lyanna and matches the personality of Rhaegar.
Ned proved in GOT that he was willing to do whatever it takes including forsake his honor to protect family, Ned most certainly was capable of keeping that secret for family.

Arthur Dayne and the other kings guard were at the ToJ before Ned. If they wanted Jon dead, not sure why, they would have killed Lyanna before she gave birth. Jon is Lyanna and Rhaegars son. If not, GRRM has been trolling us since GoT

Started a new job so I've had to stay away from this addictive thread. I am re-reading GOT, and have a question. What do y'all think is going to happen with Littlefinger and the Vale? The Vale of Arryn has been promised to the mountain clans by Tyrion, and Lannisters always pay their debts. Does that go unfulfilled? I think Tyrion gets back together with Sansa ultimately, but not until after Littlefinger has tried to use her (in a political way, not sexual).

So Ned forfeits his honor to have his sisters kid get treated worse than Theon Greyjoy his whole life? And then take the Black knowing he is the rightful heir? And gets his head removed mentioning none of this to his friend Robert on his deathbed? Does not compute.
