Of those listed, I liked 1984 the best. I thought 1984 starts out slowly, but felt the second half of the book was worth the slower pace.

I might be in the minority, but I was underwhelmed with To Kill and Pride and Prejudice. I never read the book thief.

Count was amazing.

Count of Monte Cristo great book read it over 34 years ago.

Just picked up Captain Alatriste on audio, been 10 plus years since I read that well written adventure.

Try the Cruel Sea, great book; the movie is awesome too.

You may be, but you are not alone. I had to teach TKAM one year and I drug my class through it quickly. We finished about 3 weeks faster than the other ELA 1 classes. Oops, looks like I have extra time for the Hobbit after all

The the Barnes and Noble Classic is an abridged version it is about a third of the original text. The unabridged is about 1200 pages. The abridged version was made for a 19th century English audience, besides taking out long French philosophical conversations, and whole chapters which are pertinent to the story, it takes out the parts relating to such topics as drugs and lesbianism.

The book was originally written as a serial in newspapers.

The abridged version is a great adventure story, the unabridged version reads as a much more sophisticated novel.

They are both good, but different.

Can someone link which Kindle version I should buy of this? There are over 10 different versions on Amazon and I don’t want to end up with an Abridged version.

I was going to start a new thread, but I am glad I found this one while searching. I am about 650 pages into the unabridged version. I didn't realize abridged version is just 400 pages. I think I would've been better off tackling that one.

I'd just like some straight advice. I am in the middle of the Count (it's been so many pages since they mentioned his real name that I can't remember it) getting settled in Paris. He just bought 2 horses from Danglars, gave them back, and then orchestrated some sort of close accident with them. I am having a tough time finding the motivation to read another 600 pages, but I know this is a classic many rave about. Is the love for the unabridged version from the second half of the story, or is this just likely not for me?

Pride and Prejudice! But, then, I am.....prejudiced.

And wholeheartedly agree with you on the Count of Monte Cristo, masterful book! In my top 5 all-time favorites!

Finished the Count of Monte Cristo about a month ago. Was largely disappointed. Kept doing just enough to make me not completely stop reading it.

Pride and prejudice.

And I know it’s not listed in the OP, but Wuthering heights is one of my all time favorite classics.

Find the version translated by Robin Buss. Not only is it unabridged, but it is a recent translation and doesn't contain any victorian frickery in its translation and is closer to Dumas actual writing and intent with the story.
