I’m looking for a general overview of the mafia’s roots and history in America. It doesn’t need to be specific to a particular city or family. I’ve just become very interested in this topic, but don’t know much background aside from Capone/Chicago, the 5 NY families, and various families existing around the US.

I'm not enamored with the subject, but Casino and Wiseguy (the source material for the movie Goodfellas) are both written by Nicholas Pileggi and are very good reads, Casino especially. The main character he talks about in Casino is Lefty Rosenthal, who was a very successful gambler before getting involved with the casinos/mob in Vegas. Highly recommend both.

Haven't gotten around to reading it yet, but the book you are looking for is Five Families.

It should be the starting point for anyone new to the subject (or newly interested).

Not a historian, but a journalist, Raab is sort of the "Mark Bowden" of the Mafia, particularly the Five Families.

George Anastasia is a well respected author on the Philly mob. He’s been on 60 Minutes and several documentaries
