LSU head coach Ed Orgeron announced Sunday that legendary defensive line coach Pete Jenkins will retire following the Tigers Bowl game.

The 76-year old coach will be replaced after the bowl game by current LSU outside linebackers coach Dennis Johnson. Per LSUSports.net:
quote:

“We are forever grateful for Coach Jenkins and his 15 years of service to LSU,” Orgeron said. “Coach Jenkins is one of the most respected coaches in football when it comes to defensive play.

“The LSU football program benefitted and improved because of Coach Jenkins. Our defensive line played at an extremely high level throughout the 2017 season due to the teaching, technique and expectations he instilled on his players.”

Jenkins, who joined the Tigers in September of 2016 when Orgeron took over the program, is in his third stint with LSU. He first joined the Tigers in 1980 and remained with the program for 11 years, serving as defensive line coach and taking on defensive coordinator duties in 1982 and then again from 1987-90.

“Outside of my family, the greatest thing that has happened to Pete Jenkins is LSU football,” Jenkins said. “It was my dream to be able to coach at LSU and I’ve been fortunate enough to do it on three different occasions.”

Seeing an old 70+ year old workhorse on the sideline every game sweating with his players is inspiring. This dude put in some serious time and effort. Wish the best for coach Pete! Geaux Tigers.

I’m glad Pete made this decision. He’s done so much for the program over the years and deserves all the credit and praise he is receiving. The long hours have taken their toll, and it’s time. I saw Pete on the sidelines several times this year where he looked exhausted. And understandably so. It’s a mentally and physically demanding job. Geaux enjoy time with your family, Pete. You’ve done more than your share! We got this!

I wish Coach Jenkins the very best. That man has coached some serious Defensive Line talent over the years.

We need to go get a great recruiter and teacher. Meatball is great but he doesn't have a name yet. You want to get a big named coach here ASAP to keep the top guys wanting to come play at LSU. We can't just keep moving people already on staff up. I think we would be fine as for as technique and teaching but when it comes to fighting off the big programs for talent, would be very difficult. Go get the guy who was let go from Bama a few years back, Dunbar I think is the name. Just set the standard from day one and you have nothing to worry about. He's a great recruiter and teacher. Not a coincidence that bama DL has fallen some since he left IMO. Go get him ASAP Orgeron. Could probably get him for a good price too.

As for as our DL falling off, that's false. The guys leaving never really played a great leadership role, vocally anyway. May have with their play but we now have guys who know their roles and will demand great effort from the get go. Fehoko will be another guy who can be a leader out there. Guys need to say frick how long I've been here and lead if you're a hard worker and talented. A standard needs to be set here at LSU, expectations from the team needs to be championship or bust. Losing a game can't be just losing a game anymore. Emotions kept in check, and confidence that we are going to win every game needs to be on the rise. Just know it and put in the work to get it done, in the preseason not during the season. It's too late once the season gets here. Make the guys study, ask the young ones what needs to be learned, they may not know what questions to ask. Every player needs to be on the same level, doing the same things the starters are so development happens BF it's time to start. The HC and his staff need to be asking questions about scheme in the meetings and then they need to make them go after practice to work on the things they are weak in. Work overtime in the offseason, and when the season comes you're prepared, and it's easy for you. Gotta change if you're going to change the outcomes. The more time put in the more you'll get out later. FACT! Get it Devin White. Get after them. Talk to coach, this has got to change, do this and what Saban told you will be worthless once your done here at LSU.
