LSU defensive tackle Deuce Geralds continues to turn heads during his impressive freshman season.

ESPN released its rankings of the Top 25 freshmen in college football so far this season, with Geralds coming in at No. 2 overall.

The former four-star recruit has made an immediate impact on LSU's defensive line, recording five sacks through the first five games. Geralds also made history against McNeese last Saturday, becoming the first LSU player to record a sack and score an offensive touchdown in the same game.

Here's what ESPN had to say about the Tigers' standout freshman:
quote:

2. Deuce Geralds, DT, LSU

While he wasn't LSU's highest-rated defensive line recruit -- that belonged to No. 1 recruit Lamar Brown -- Geralds still ranked No. 40 in the nation, and we tabbed him as a ready-made Day 1 contributor because of his explosiveness despite a smaller 6-1, 280-pound frame. He has lived up to expectations, earning a role immediately along a talented Tigers defensive front. Geralds' five sacks are tied for eighth nationally, and he even ran for a touchdown in a blowout against McNeese. Geralds has the strength to hold up against the run with a motor that keeps him around the football.
Oregon State's Jesse Legree landed at No. 1 on this list. Through five games, Legree has 28 receptions for 741 yards and nine touchdowns.

Why is it that people only ever want to talk about freshmen in the context of being a freshman? "What a great freshman!", "one of the best freshmen in the country". This dude is one of the best defensive linemen in the country, period. Not just best among freshmen.

I think it’s more significant because he’s so young still and his first year with the big boys.

Yeah, I realize that, but that's not my point. My point is that it undervalues the player when you just say how good he is among freshmen. Saying that he's one of the best defensive players, period, in the country, while being a freshman, is what needs to be said. Instead, people always say "one of the best freshmen in the country". I've noticed this for years. People, for some reason, can't seem to talk about freshmen in the context of ALL players in country.

Geralds for Heisman by 2028! Keep using him in short yardage like that and let him gain some yards.

Alpha Dog!!! Can’t wait to see him in year three at LSU. He reminds me so much of Glenn Dorsey.

more like Chad Lavalais to me. I don't recall Dorsey being as explosive.

Explosive? Dorsey was an atomic bomb before that punk from auburn rolled him up.

Lavalais wasn't even close to being as explosive as Dorsey.
