LSU coach Lane Kiffin spoke to the Baton Rouge Rotary Club on Wednesday afternoon, touching on a variety of topics as the Tigers prepare for the start of fall camp next week.

Kiffin explained that once camp officially begins, players will be held to higher standards now that they are being compensated through NIL.

“We have a highly demanding program. The old days of being the student-athlete, those are gone once you’re making this kind of money. Nobody just gets anything.”

Kiffin said programs that dismissed NIL as a passing trend ultimately fell behind, warning that failing to adapt would lead to coaching changes.

Kiffin also provided a positive update on quarterback Sam Leavitt, saying he is doing well physically. The focus during fall camp will be building chemistry and timing with his teammates, something that began this summer but will become even more important over the coming weeks.

While excitement surrounding the 2026 season is high, Kiffin said he is equally encouraged by the long-term outlook of the program.

"Once we get to Year 2, we’ll be able to develop a deeper roster. As excited as we are about this year, I want to talk about building for the future."

Kiffin also revealed that LSU is actively exploring the use of AI in player evaluation, saying successful programs must evolve rather than rely on outdated methods.

"We had a meeting about it yesterday. You can't just keep doing things the old way. If you did that, you'd still be in the I formation and huddle."

Yeah but it was 4th and 1 on every drive. Do the math.

4x3=12 there's your math for you

your 4x3 method means going for it on 4th down every down. Do that against good defenses like the one we have at LSU, and you get stopped before you score. That's REAL math for you to chew on

Amazing what a real coach can do or say compared to the previous 'Southern accent imitator.'

I agree with you but that story line is getting old with a new coach in place. You gotta move on. Go Tigers.

I have always wondered why they call it fall camp when it is held in August.

I'm 75, but compared to the thinking of some on here I must be in my 30s and they the over the hill ones in their 70s. The modern method Lane is going to use is exciting. Using AI is wise. Those who want 3 yards and a cloud of dust are antiques. Look around. We play on grass and artificial turf. There is NO DUST anymore

If only he would have added “I formation, boundary toss…”

I understand what he is saying but the thought of AI getting a spot at the eval table seems icky

Not as a singular function but if you’re looking for x type of player with a, b, c, stats/measurables., It can narrow down a lot of legwork. Think of the movie money all in a sense.
