Yahoo Sports is reporting that LSU head coach Will Wade has been recorded on an FBI wiretap with basketball middleman Christian Dawkins discussing an "offer" and mentions "this smart thing" while on the call.

The report states that Wade spoke with Dawkins a few times between June 19, 2017, and June 30, 2017 and that Wade expressed frustration on the calls about a players commitment.
quote:

“I was thinking last night on this Smart thing,” Wade said. “I’ll be honest with you, I’m [expletive] tired of dealing with the thing. Like I’m just [expletive] sick of dealing with the [expletive]. Like, this should not be that [expletive] complicated.”

There is no elaboration on what the “Smart thing” is. Javonte Smart is currently a freshman guard at LSU and formerly a top-50 recruit from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Dawkins is known to be on FBI wiretaps during the late spring and summer of 2017. ESPN, citing court records, previously reported that Dawkins had “at least three calls with a cellphone number belonging to LSU coach Will Wade, each of which occurred between June 19, 2017, and June 30, 2017.” Smart announced his commitment to LSU via Twitter on June 30, 2017.

“Dude,” Wade continued to Dawkins, referring to the third party involved in the recruitment, “I went to him with a [expletive] strong-ass offer about a month ago. [Expletive] strong.

“The problem was, I know why he didn’t take it now, it was [expletive] tilted toward the family a little bit,” Wade continued. “It was tilted toward taking care of the mom, taking care of the kid. Like it was tilted towards that. Now I know for a fact he didn’t explain everything to the mom. I know now, he didn’t get enough of the piece of the pie in the deal.” Read more.
This news comes just a couples weeks after Yahoo reported that Wade and Arizona coach Sean Miller have both been notified that they will be subpoenaed for the April 22 federal basketball corruption trial.

LSU is set to wrap up the regular season on Saturday vs. Vanderbilt and could head into the SEC Tournament with No. 1 overall seed. The Tigers are currently 25-5, 15-2 SEC and are projected to be a No. 2-3 seed in the NCAA Tournament later this month.

College sports are completely corrupt...they're all cheating and the system needs to be torn down. The NBA and NFL need to start minor leagues and only students academically qualify for the college of their choice should be allowed to go out for whatever athletics program the university provides.

I agree. We should also tell everyone to stop using drugs and stop stealing. Then the world will be a beautiful place!

I’m not one to bury my head in the sand but let’s be completely honest for a second. ALL top programs cheat. And I’d venture to say this is chicken compared to the blue blood tourney regulars. This is the equivalent of pursuing a small time college student weed dealer while there are unsolved murder cases going on all around you. This is going after the low hanging fruit to make this whole federal waste of resources look like it was worth it. And whoever decided to break this now as opposed to two months from now can eat a bag of AIDS dicks. Yeah, I’m mad.

Why does a strong offer mean wrong doing? This is all perception in my opinion

"It [the offer] was tilted toward taking care of the mom".... it means the mom got some benefits from Wade's offer. Don't be naive.

atltiger6487, you are obviously a toxic person here. You want me to assume impropriety from a quoted statement which does not contain impropriety. For some mothers the benefit, and recruiting pitch, is that their child won't be used for college sports profits and allowed to fail in his education. Some mothers want to see a system which provides support and cares for their child beyond just scoring points. I won't assume that the mother is being paid. That's a ridiculous assumption absent some evidence. Why is is naive not to imagine illegality from a quote which does not contain any illegality? really.

I think what disappoints me more is that he was talking about this shite on the phone. Rookie mistake.

If all that's in the wire tap is what is quoted above, it doesn't suggest anything improper. Some recruiting pitches are geared toward the parents and some are geared toward the player. There would have to be something much more serious than this to reach any conclusions at all.

Truth! One of my best friends was a D1 Recruit in football, (‘05). Not a huge recruit either, but he said the shite offered to him was crazy. It absolutely happens everywhere in all sports!
