I hate to say it, but this characteristic has become common place during the Les Miles era at LSU (minus the bowl games) - an underperforming, but winning, outing.

This comment from Jimmy Ott pretty much sums up what I am saying about our coach

Some of our fans seem to be completely retarded. We have three 11-2 seasons in a row and then have one 8-5 season. We have only played one game this year so far and all I can read on this damn board is how bad Miles is, and how we have fallen from greatness. For God's sake we won the damn game and our fans are so spoiled even a win isn't good enough for them. It was the first game.

Some of our armchair coach fans need to realize that they don't know as much about football as Les Miles does. It's really easy to be overly critical when your not actually on that field.

And I really can't believe we actually have fans who are trying to take away from our own national championship, this is saddening to see.

The sky isn't falling

However Miles only accomplishment was due to complete luck.

Then so was Saban's. Except that Miles has some other good seasons to hang his hat on, Saban has one lucky national championship and some mediocre seasons. Even his first SEC title he had three losses and backed into it. We got lucky that Rohan got hurt, so we could surprise Tennessee with a running QB (Mauck). We obviously didn't deserve it, and then we got really lucky and played a shitty Illinois team instead of a better team that would have surely killed us. On top of that, we are ALWAYS lucky to play in New Orleans, because if we played somewhere away from home, we would surely lose. On top of that, we are lucky to have so much talent in Louisiana, so the school recruits itself.

We are so damn lucky. Where was all this luck in the 90s?

I'm saying they were lucky as hell to be their due to the circumstances that the coach put them in.
now i see where you are coming from. ok, miles had two losses. what other team played 5 ranked teams at that point in the season and only had 2 losses? to repeat, talent alone is not keeping miles alive in the toughest conference.

That should of been a undefeated team and was better than the two who did play in the NCG but coaching prevented that.
again, you're missing the point about scheduling, chemistry, officiating and plain old luck. coaching is NOT the only factor in the game nor was it the sole reason lsu didn't go undefeated that season.

Bubba, I honor your passion and for the record I don't hate Les just think Lsu needs a different coach. Someone from the SEC. I see LSU as a Big 12 Team in the SEC with Miles at the helm. However to comment on your last post. The only team that was lucky in 03 is USC cause they didn't have to play LSU

However, let's also be honest about the fact that LSU was very fortunate that WVU lost at home to Pitt.
if you're going to say that then every bit of a college football season is all luck for every team, coach and player

No,in this guy's little world only Les Miles gets lucky. No one else. Afterall,he's never outcoached anyone.

I agree that LSU deserved to be selected for that NC game. However, let's also be honest about the fact that LSU was very fortunate that WVU lost at home to Pitt. That was pure luck that was well beyond the control of any LSU coach. Pitt was a hefty underdog in Morgantown.

In 03 if ND had beaten Syracuse or if Hawaii had beaten Boise in Hawaii, or any of several other scenarios had occurred, no LSU fan would be able to bitch about USC because LSU would not have gone the the NCG.

I'll elaborate by asking you 3 questions.

What characteristics are Big 12 teams know for?

What characteristics are SEC teams know for?

Where does LSU fit?

This has gotten waaaay more interesting than I ever thought it would.

In order to contend for a National Title, you have to have great coaching, great players, and occasionally, a favorable schedule. But in order to make it to the National Title, you have to be freaking lucky, no matter who you are.

Miles is a damn fine coach and with any LUCK will have us playing for a national title again this year. Without it, we'll be contenders.

just said if Michigan comes after him, we can get Saban.

I remember the days when the rumors flew that Ara Parseghian (ND's coach back in the 1970s) had bought a house in Baton Rouge and was going to replace McClendon.

The "Saban will come back" fantasies are in the same category. Not gonna happen.
