re: Ben Simmons on ESPN2

THE Timing of poor performances was a factor in last year's failure. Ben S. not asserting hisself at crucial times of games. The Freshman Blakeney not coming on until the second half of the season.Even Hornsby played timid and turned the ball over a lot at a pivotal point of the season, for example-Alabama at home and of course times of his Injuries.
TQ had heart and tried to step up when nobody else could or would, but his skill set and physical aspect didn't go together. He was built to be a versatile small forward, not your primary ball handler, but the other PG's were even less quicker in the half court. And,TQ didn't shoot well enough to be an effective SF.But it is troubling Ben didn't dand the ball and show that fight down low when most needed, which would of made up for his shooting woes.Maybe he wasn't hungry enough because he didn't have to fight to make it to the NBA.

B.Harris will be OK if he'said not scared nervous, and overwhelmed when the Big Boys of the SEC roll around, you know who they are.Just got to wait and see.

Anthony Randolph vs.Benny Sim

While AR was not hyped at all as a freshman and didn't have the weight and open court ball handling skills. He showed grit against the tough stronger players and played with intensity inspite of his slight size.He didn't fade when times got tough.Even in the NBA he was a young warrior. But as for is Ben there is s 50percent chance he'll do ok until the meaningful part of the seaso n when the big boys start playing for almost blood-Ben will fade .Something skinny AR would never do.

Outclassed. Pros know how to make there job easy.Ameteurs struggle and don't know why.LSU=a hackman in foul trouble, a erractic point guard,no arsenal attack back court dual,no inside shot blocking at all,a 6'10 guy who don't know he should JUST turn and shoot when a players is on his hip-even when the games on the line.
Hope he goes Mahmoud on them tomorrow and from here on out
Does Ben know what time it is? He may missed the game with his lack of awareness. But he's a young, and believe it or not basketball players need experience to become masters of the trade to. He's a good open court big man though, good around the basket in most cases, but is missing the effective nuances of the game. And it seems that this lack of awareness and lack of effective nuances are always are at crucial times of the game. With his present ability and mind set he needs to play with 3 other effective shooters to be a winner.
You can blame it on JJ if you want, but you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.
Young kids have a tendency to not do what they think they might not get instant success doing. Even though it would benefit them later or even sooner then they think.
And, there's the PG and his decisions and his ,over self assessment-it seems.Only one guy AB who creates his shot and thats just lately. And AB has been less of a defense liability on the whole team the whole season, he's has been overpowered at times but not as much as the rest. Just a misfit and not a well rounded , talented TEAM even with KH.
"This team is still good enough to make a run if certain guys get hot and we get a few breaks with matchups".

Not if CJJ can't figure out how to get TQ to stop dribbling the ball, and focus on rebounding and Defense, and get some kind of motion offense, and keeping the middle unclogged, for Ben and AD(Thats on CJJ).
But when you only got one shooter who is just coming on late season, what can he do against a zone D. It would be better if KH was helping, but even at that, this team is missing the right size and skill sets at the 3,at the 1 , and the 5 when you include a shot blocking type.

In order for Ben to be effective with his skill set, he's got to put it up more down low( put it up period), but if he does you'll need two good size atheletes to clean his misses up, that is if he misses. But if your 3 is not crashing, and being around rim as a bail out option when he's making his moves, they have an extra man focusing on Ben.
And the bench, it seems like every body is missing one- attribute, size, quickness or skill set.

I didn't see much of the games. You guys are pretty adamant about Jones not being a good coach, it's probably some truth to that. I am wondering did he position AB on the side(wing) of the court so that he could drive and use his left shoulder to protect the ball and finish with his right hand. And have Ben on the other(wing) side so he could drive and protect with his right shoulder and finish with his left hand?
The team had flaws and had people playing in positions they should have not and could not do effectively- due to not having the right size , quickness, or shooting ability.TQ is a slight SF playing PG TQ had no mid-range game, and could not create anything - and no PG quickness( he was a 3,but didn't shoot well enough to play the 3). Offensive load fell on Ben, but he's a semipassive guy who needs 3 good consistent outside shooters and a 3 that has to be a all around player with size, to help on defense and the offensive boards.
But it is all CJJ had- a misfit patched up team. With no bench no shot blocking big etc. And next year probably no real 3 again, no shot blocker(s),no bench, no real PG- unless the Freshman is a really good. It's LSU basketball-not Kentucky, but I'll be rooting
:geauxtigers:
"With him gone next year, the team will have to come together and not depend on him as a savior".

Boy I sure wish the team could get a real 3, who can shoot, handle ball a little, and run, and defend other 3. And not a guard trying to play that position. A real point guard and not a half-effective forward trying to play PG.And a real center who blocks shots and not a 6'9" PF trying to do that ineffectively. And atleast 3 bench players with no big drop off when put in.

But hey it's LSU basketball, we can expect ANOTHER patched up misfit team and, we will be rooting for them :geauxtigers:
Ben's got a 50-50 chance of being an All Star, but it's far from a lock. guys like Rashid Wallace, didn't play point forward on fast breaks, but you knew he was NBA type deadly shooters on the turn and shoot moves
It's the TQ don't give a crap time
I would expect a number 1 pick to take over a game at this point instead of just hanging out walking around.

take over? he does even know a easy score when he gets the position to get one
TQ is built to be a shooter not a half-speed ball handler.
But he can't shoot so where does that leave LSU and TQ
all ben had to do there was turn to his left hand and shoot.
"This is a poorly disciplined and prepared team".

basketball really isn't rocket science. There's no real playmaking-effcient point guard on this team. A simple pick to free up Blakeney can do wonders, except he is hesitating when he gets it throwing his own rythym off. Victor should be involved in pick and rolls- thats on the coaches.
No point guard, Ben can't shoot, Blakeney got to realize he can't hesitate and make fast hard moves and shoot.
No-look, passing into the post is whats needed.
The constant telegrahing ,signals the defense to front, the big man,so then the ball handlers decides to go elsewhere with the ball. The behind the back pass is the most effective no-look pass. Heck you can get little 8 year olders good open shots with that pass. Our point guard in high school won awards because of being able to run the court, play defense, make lay ups,(couldn't and didn't shoot) and getting people easy shots with that behind the back pass. Simmons is the only one that uses the behind the back pass, but needs to be receiving it. I would settle for just a few no-look passes, though. Where's the coaches?
Has Jones ever call a isolation play for Ben the way they did for AB the last game? For examaple all of LSU's players, were on one side, except AB and his defender, were on the other side of the court.

Is he a heck of a shooter like Durant was(or even Westbrook)? Shooting the ball well with size can get it done in the NBA.Or have the overpowering size, game, and tough attitude like Shaq? .Yeah he's a Magic Johnson type but Magic had a rock offensive Center, and a team that had the best at every position. After all of the hype Benny-Sim received before even setting foot on a college court he would be running the risk of being called a bust-a RICH one, but a BUST. Especially if his team loses or not meet fans expectations. And when the media starts chirping, it could unravel him permanently. If he's not starving he would benefit with a another year of college , learning to shoot, playing man to man defense with his feet, blocking shots cleanly and getting hisself a quick one bounce jump hook-before the double teams come. And free throw shooting- he doesn't want a Hack-a-Ben in the NBA.

He'll probably do the opposite because of people like me though
