I own a lot of QQQ and am starting to worry about it being forced to purchase Space X shares 15 days after the initial offering at greatly overvalued prices.

There is the additional concern that in order to come up with the cash to buy the SpaceX shares, QQQ will have to dump a bunch of its other holdings, thereby depressing those stock prices.

What are your thoughts on this? Sell QQQ ahead of time? Perhaps a buying opportunity of the underlying holdings whose shares will drop?

Note: I would only do this in tax deferred accounts -- not my taxable accts due to capital gains.

If SpaceX ends up 2-3% of QQQ at inclusion, the impact of one potentially overvalued holding is manageable across the broader index.

Trading around index composition changes undermines the whole premise of owning an ETF. Front-running index rebalancing is mostly an institutional game retail investors can’t win consistently anyway.

Personally I’m not thrilled about being a forced buyer of SpaceX at IPO valuation with no say in the matter — but that’s the tradeoff you accept with passive index investing.

I'm 99% certain the index inclusions are done on a float-adjusted basis and not market cap. In this example, SpaceX is only floating like $75B worth, so it's kind of a non-event.
