We're going back again in September. This trip will be exclusively northern Italy.
Here's where we are now.
9/15 Milan
9/16-9/18 Treviso (daytrip to Burano and Murano)
9/18-9/21 Dolomites
9/21-9/26 Bologna (with daytrips to Modena and Ferrara)
9/26-9/28 Cinque Terre (will just hang out in and explore one town, no hiking) 9/28-10/1 Piedmonte region (Serralunga)
10/1 Milan hotel for 10/2 flight home.
Two days to have a car and explore the Dolomites. We've done Venice before so we'll stay in Treviso to check it out and train to Venice for the Murano and Burano daytrip. Bologna we'll take a little time to explore and daytrip without having to pack and travel for several days. Cinque Terre we're interested in but don't feel like spending a ton of time there. Piedmonte will be at our favorite little agritourismo in the middle of the Barolo wine region. Exploring and vineyards will be filling our days.
Thoughts are welcome.

I would generally agree. My wife and I stayed there 3 nights. While it is an awesome place, and the train between the villages makes transportation extremely easy, it was very touristy and I would not rate the food as highly as other places in Italy.

CT is beautiful but I wouldn’t go back. In the early morning and evening it’s great, but then the cruise ships arrive and the cattle start making their way down the street.

Yeah, it's the one place that is a just check it off the list type place.
When we daytrip to Modena we'll stay for dinner but you know what restaurant has no opening.

The other thing I would suggest around there is the Italian lake region.
The area around Lakes Como, Lugano and Maggiore are absolutely gorgeous. I have been there twice. We stayed in Lugano, Switzerland which is right across the lake from the Italian border.
Stressa is the town closest to Milan. From there you can take a boat to the island off shore to see the Barromeo Palace.

Yeah that’s not a place you just casually grab a reservation.
If you never listen to me again, I get it. I’m terrible. But listen to this advice. Go to Hosteria Giusti in Modena. Even if it’s just for lunch. Get the gnocco fritto.
You’re welcome.

Thank you sir. I figured I was 6 months out and would try for the reservation. They do (did) have a couple in October but they were for 10 am.
We are scratching Cinque Terre. We have always wanted to stay on the piazza in Greve and we're going to do it. Then I can also visit my favorite little vineyard in Gaiole in Chianti.
We've done Lake Como before and will save Garda for another trip.

The Town of Greve itself is not as scenic or charming as some of the others in Tuscany but it is home to my favorite wine store anywhere.

Other than the enoteca in Montalcino at La Fortezza yes.
Greve is close to places we want to go like Radda, Gaiole in Chianti and some others. I doubt that we'll make it to Montalcimo or Montepulciano this time but we've been to both a few times.

Good idea.
When you are in Gaiole, make sure you go to Castello di Brolio , home of the Ricasoli family. It is a beautiful and historic castle. The recipe for Chianti Classico was developed there.
The castle is on top of the hill and the winery’s tasting room is at the bottom. Their top end wines are spectacular. We stocked up on them.

Been there. I’m a member of their club and I love Brolio.
When we went a friend who’d been there before had us park in the lot at the bottom. A couple of hundred steps later we get to the top and what is up there? Another parking lot!

That time of year in CT shouldn’t be as crowded
Posted on 3/14/23 at 9:12 pm to PassGassed
I checked the cruise schedule. Ships there every day. The travel from Bologna was also going to be a long tiring day. We’ll do Cinque Terre another time when we do the Aosta Valley.
Now we take a 40 minute train ride, have lunch with friends in Firenze and then drive 40 minutes to Greve.

Good plan. The butcher shop in Greve makes great sandwiches

Is the cruise crowd in CT simply worse nowadays?
We spent 2 weeknights in Vernazza back in June 2012 and I don’t recall it being that crowded at all. Keep in mind, places the Blue Marlin had been closed since the October 2011 mudslides and re-opened the week we arrived.
The trails were busy but not miserable, restaurants similar…I’m just trying to get a sense of the current travel climate. I always tell people they need to visit CT, but now may encourage shoulder season now.

Verona was neat. Stresa on lake maggorie was good for us.

OK, the trip is fully fleshed out and booked. Three train rides, three rental cars and two private transfers.
9/16 - 9/18 Treviso with a side trip on the 17th to Burano
9/18 - 9/21 Cortina d'Ampezzo in the Dolomites with a rental car
9/21 - 9/26 Bologna with at least a day trip to Modena and possibly a day trip to Parma or Ferrara. I'm leaning to Parma
9/26 - 9/28 Greve in Chianti in a rental car to get a little Tuscany time in and visit my favorite vineyard in Tuscany
9/28 - 10/2 Serralunga d'Alba in a rental car to visit more vineyards and stay at an agritourismo we love
Now it's time to start working on dinner reservations as I only have one so far.

How about Naples and Mt. Vesuvius? The ruins of Pompeii.
Posted on 7/4/23 at 5:00 pm to Pisco
This is a northern Italy trip. I've been to Naples and it's not the nicest city in Italy. I'll leave it at that.
I would like to visit Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius on one of these trips.
