My company wants me to use some vacation time due to the China flu. Thought about driving up to Yellowstone for a week. Is this a terrible time of the year to visit?

Even on a year without the virus, a lot of stuff in the park will still be closed then due to snow.

I checked into it last year, apparently it take 6 weeks to clear the snow from the roads on a normal year and that normally doesn’t happen till mid may.

Don't do it. The snow in WY is hard to comprehend for people that live in the South. It was still snowing off and on in June last year. We tried to go to Rocky Mountain National Park outside Denver, and it was closed due to a blizzard....In June.

Yellowstone is best in Late May / Early June. Still some snow, most everything is open, calves are dropping, and most importantly- the tourists aren't 4 miles deep at the entrance. The transition of Jackson Hole from April to August is amazing to witness. I learned that every Asian in the world goes to Yellowstone. There are more Asians than Bison in the Park at any given time during the summer.

Not sure what this has to do with visiting in April but cool, great observation?

I don’t think it’s ever been a secret that Asians travel to Yellowstone in droves.

Which makes me think this may be a good summer to visit if things open back up. I can’t help but think there would be less of them traveling this year than in years past.

And when you are calculating travel time in Yellowstone, you need to multiply the number of Asians times the number of bison, elk and deer. Because they stop traffic to take pictures of every single one.

There are people who love to go in winter but I don’t get it. A guy was telling me that they keep a few roads or trails clear of snow and it eventually becomes like a tunnel with several feet of snow packed on either side. Some of the animals share the cleared trails with people. He said that a guide told them that if they ran into a herd of bison or whatever, they were supposed to get their snowmobile as close to the wall of snow as possible and then crouch between the snowmobile and the snow wall while the animals passed.

Not sure if he was exaggerating but I’ll wait for the warmer weather.

I just started looking and there is availability in most of the on-property hotels at the beginning of June. Anyone think we might have a chance at things being open to be able to make the trip?

As many have said it's still snowy and won't be cleared for a bit. My parents (live in West Yellowstone) said the snow is melting but will be some time before park opens even without the virus. I highly recommend going in the winter though and doing the snowmobile trips in the park. Get to see a whole different side of Yellowstone without the Asians. What somebody said above about Bison is somewhat true. If Bison are around you (we were within 5-10 feet a lot) park the snowmobiles as close together as you can. They will stand in between the snowmobiles and refuse to move. I wouldn't go after Christmas however. It's just too snowy if you aren't prepared.

Yellowstone is open year round. The only difference in the winter is only the north entrance and the north-east entrance are open to vehicles. The only road that is open is from Mammoth to Lamar Valley. This is one of the best times to visit the park if you have winter clothing. You will see more wildlife than any other time in the park, and the scenery is breathtaking. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for your first visit, because you will miss out on most of the park unless you pay ridiculous amounts of money for snowmobile tours.

Granted, that is for a normal year. It is definitely closed this year do to COVID, and will probably remain closed until mid-late May.

I was there in May 2018, and the snow was still 20' deep in parts... it was a well below average snow season. Almost nothing other than overlooks in GTNP or YNP will be open in April.

He is driving from Houston so saying the park is open year round isn't best advice for him honestly since he is coming from the south. Sure the north and northeast entrances might be open year round, but all other entrances are usually closed until at least mid to late April. South usually into May.

Houston to South entrance - 25 hrs
Houston to North East entrance - 26 hrs

Adding 4% to his trip time is bad advice?
