Just watched the new Somebody Feed Phil and now I have a burning desire to go to Finland. Flights from Boston are very reasonable. Just curious to hear about experiences there!

Will be watching that episode soon and want to go as well. Sounds like that will increase after I watch.

I've been a couple of times, the latest about 5 years ago. The first time was in 2001 or so and Helsinki was kind of a sleepy town back then. It has come a long way with a lot going on with several vibrant areas. And I'm generally not a fan of food halls but Helsinki has a really great, cozy hall. Hietalahden kauppahalli. Gotta try Sahti beer if you go.

Tallin, Estonia is just a 2 hour ferry ride away and has the most fantastic old town Ive ever seen.

This was on my bucket list. We were going. Then we got re-routed.

Too bad, you should definitely try to get there. Latvia and Lithuania are great too.

Similar to Zappas takes...but would love to put in a vote for Vilnius...one of my favorite little cities to stroll around in.

As for Helsinki..Suomenlinna Islands after takin a ferry is great...

Every damn day.

Stay away, it sucks. Tallinn, Estonia much better tourist place. Finns travel there to have fun. Seriously though, if you like food, stay far away.

Go frick yourself. It's an honest assessment based on living here for 8 years. Any Finn will tell you the same. Helsinki is hot garbage. Forget public restrooms. They piss on doorsteps and walls on most Friday and Saturday. It's super fricking expensive compared to other parts of Finland. Finland is amazing, but the question was about Helsinki. Haista viituun Abita.

This isn't wrong. If you have some tourism cash and time to burn, Helsinki isn't in the top half of my list. This is not an indictment of Finland, Finnish people, etc...

Think of it this way: You have a few thou to spend and a week. Do you want to go to Columbus or Fresno? No? WTF why do you hate Columbus or Fresno??? Oh you don't hate them but there might be more interesting places to go.

Looks like everyone else has covered my recs. I did Riga, bused to Tallinn, and ferried to Helsinki. 2nd checking out old Tallinn. The KGB museum there is very somber.

Helsinki is very expensive. Go to Suomenlinna. If you are single, you are in luck. Finnish women have a thing for American men or any other outgoing male. While very nice people, Finnish men tend to be reserved and a bit awkward. That and there are a lot of Russian smokeshows that live there too.

Honest to god, I read your post as one of the annoying stereotypical “it sucks here don’t come were full” that people tend to do when what they mean is “it’s nice here but we don’t want visitors”

If I misunderstood and you were giving genuine advice, then please accept my apologies.

All good then. I drive daily in Helsinki for my job. I actually live in Espoo right next door and it's 10 times nicer than Helsinki. If someone just wants claim they have been to Helsinki to collect a capitol city then do it. My problem is that I am from Huntsville. HSV is way less than half the population of Helsinki yet double the size. Everything is too crammed together. It's claustrophobic. There are decent places in Helsinki, but you have to know how to find them. I just went to the zoo here for the first time and it was by far the worst zoo I have been to.

Now, if it's a single person without a S.O. then by all means, yeah it can be fun.

Finnish cuisine consists of adding only salt and pepper to whatever meat, and maybe some kinda cream. They eat potatoes like Asians eat rice, with every damn meal. I know because my Finnish wife cooks potatoes in 95% of our meals and I'm sick of them.

If I was a tourist I would fly to Helsinki for a day, that's all it takes to see it all. Then I would immediately fly to Rovaniemi, rent a car (don't forget 10 dollars a gallon for gas), then explore Lapland. Which is amazing.

So you don't like cities, that's fine. My wife and I spent 3 days there, thoroughly enjoyed it, except for the high prices, and would have liked to stay longer. We found several cool bars, met and hung out with some friendly locals, saw some great architecture (Alvar Alto studio and home tour, Finlandia Hall, Kiasma Art Museum ), visited some great museums (Kiasma, HAM, EMMA is Espoo where you live) had some good food and rode bikes around and had fun.

Are the refugee issues and related crime a real problem in Finland? Or overblown?
